Operational Errors Can Be Costly for Companies of Any Size, But for Small Businesses, A Mistake Can Mean Irrecoverable Losses. A Simple Pricing Error on A Washing Machine Made by An Employee Resulted in A Million-Dollar Loss

A simple typing mistake can cost millions. A small business faces a potential loss of US$ 4.2 million after an employee made a mistake on the price of washing machines, leading to a flood of orders below the actual value.

A small Chinese company may face a loss of US$ 4.2 million after a pricing error made by an employee.

For 20 minutes, online shoppers took advantage of discounts far beyond expectations, resulting in thousands of orders at incorrect prices.

Pricing Error Leads to Thousands of Purchases

The company Little Swan Dongshan Franchise Shop, based in Anhui, China, sells washing machines on the Tmall platform.

On August 28, 2024, an employee mistakenly labeled the prices of the products, offering significant discounts. In just 20 minutes, over 40,000 orders were placed.

The estimated loss could reach 30 million yuan (approximately US$ 4.14 million).

During the incident, the company sold 70 million yuan (approximately US$ 9.66 million) in products but only received 40 million yuan (approximately US$ 5.52 million), resulting in a million-dollar deficit.

The situation spiraled out of control quickly as consumers began sharing the reduced prices on social media, attracting even more shoppers to the online store.

Appeal for Order Cancellations

In light of the situation, the company asked customers to cancel their purchases.

The company stated that the volume of orders received, amounting to tens of thousands, and the sums involved, reaching millions, represent an unprecedented challenge for the company.

In a statement, it apologized to affected customers and requested understanding regarding the situation.

The company promised to quickly refund buyers who accepted to cancel their purchases.

Despite the request, many consumers claim to have legally acquired the products and expect to receive their washing machines at the advertised prices.

Some buyers have already resorted to consumer protection platforms, claiming that the company’s error should not be a factor for canceling their purchases.

Employee Accepts Responsibility

The error was caused by a misunderstanding about the store’s preferred prices on the Tmall platform.

The mistake led to drastic reductions, with washing machines priced at 1,699 yuan (approximately US$ 240) sold for only 299 yuan (approximately US$ 42). Models that should have cost 2,499 yuan (approximately US$ 354) were sold for 439 yuan (approximately US$ 62).

To prove that the discount was a human error, the company released a video of the responsible employee apologizing.

He stated that even selling everything he owned, he would not be able to cover the losses.

The company also emphasized that it will review its internal processes to prevent similar problems in the future.

Investigation and Possible Consequences

The local market supervision authority has opened an investigation into the case. Legal experts explained that the company needs to provide evidence that a genuine error occurred.

If it fails to demonstrate this, it may be compelled to honor all purchases, which could lead it to bankruptcy.

Some marketplace rules may protect sellers in cases of evident error, but consumers also have rights regarding purchases made under seemingly legitimate terms.
