The Rigs Chartered by the State Company in Brazil Are Already Facing Contracts Expiring in 2018 and 2019, Petrobras Is Launching the First Bids to Replace and Hire More. Understand

New platforms will be chartered by Petrobras with the aim of replacing the old fleet and negotiating more competitive prices; sooner or later this moment would come and it may be good for some operators and bad for others. Last month, it had already released a tender for two platforms with anchoring systems that will operate in depths of 500 meters and another at 2200 meters. The next step will be 2 more units for the Santos Basin.

By January next year, no more and none that 14 rigs will have their contracts expire, out of a total of 23 currently active in the country, not counting those abroad. The expectation is that Petrobras will choose to obtain just over half of the current number of rigs, considering there aren’t many ongoing deals due to many multinationals exploring oil assets here as well. To save costs, the state company plans to reduce the fleet to between 15 or 18 rigs.

Companies That May Enter and Those That May Exit

Petrobras has been taking stricter measures for the hiring of new rigs, removing from the list companies that have histories of many fatal accidents and their records in Brazil or in other countries; some of them include: Petroserv, Transocean, and Ensco. Among the companies invited to participate in the tenders are Maersk, Rowan, Ocean Rig Diamond, Queiroz Galvão, and Seadrill. According to experts, Queiroz Galvão may have an advantage as it already has an anchoring rig in the country, making it a further economy as it will avoid relocation taxes.

Two rigs from Seadrill contracted by Petrobras will be replaced, the West Carina and West Tellus which are set to expire this year and next year. It is unclear what the relationship between the state company and Seadrill will be from then on. Depending on negotiations with more flexible daily rental values, more rigs may even be contracted, as long as they have the capacity to operate in deep waters.

Contracts Expiring in 2018

  • Queiroz Galvão
  • Seadrill
  • Ocean Rig
  • Transocean
  • Ocyan
  • Diamond Offshore

Some companies are at risk of not having any rigs operating for Petrobras if they do not succeed in securing more contracts in 2018; these include: Queiroz Galvão, Ocean Rig, and Transocean. Regardless of what happens in the coming months, there will be hires due to the mobilization of companies in the sector. The question remains: Will you be prepared for this moment?
