After Cancellation Of The Sale To Acron, Unigel Shows Interest In Buying Petrobras Fertilizer Plant
The giant Brazilian company Unigel has been operating plants for years in the market, and now it has publicly expressed interest in buying the Petrobras fertilizer plant. UFN 3 (Nitrogen Fertilizer Unit 3) was in negotiation with the Russian company Acron, but the sale was canceled due to impasses regarding the payment method.
This was the only public indication of any interested party, but the process is set to reopen in June for negotiations. The other units sold by Petrobras have already been acquired by Unigel, which is one of the largest chemical fertilizer companies in Latin America. Want to know more? In other words, the business plan that was presented by Acron to Petrobras does not align with the initial proposal, which created an impediment to the negotiations. However, the uncertainty surrounding input prices contributed to this decision.

“Given this scenario of supply issues, uncertainties, and consequently rising prices, there is greater interest in investments in the area, whether in the construction of new factories or the reactivation of dormant factories, new substitute goods, and new technologies”.

Fertilizer Imports Have Increased A Lot In The Last 10 Years, Which Makes Unigel Even More Interested In Stimulating National Production
According to a survey conducted by the Portal360 team, fertilizer imports to Brazil reached 41.5 million tons in 2021. This represents an increase of 119% in volume over the last 11 years. Check the data in the graph below.

This data points to a favorable investment scenario in the national chain, especially in Petrobras’ plant, as there is a high demand for the input to be met. After all, Brazil ranks 8th in the world among the largest consumers of fertilizers, with potassium being the main nutrient used nationally.
The National Fertilizer Plan Created By The Federal Government In 2022 Aims To Favor The National Scenario Of This Input, Which Opens The Way For Investors
However, aiming to favor the national scenario for fertilizer production and stimulate a reduction in imports, the federal government enacted in March of this year the National Fertilizer Plan (PNF). It brings measures to stimulate national production and a set of measures for the next 28 years to solve this structural problem.
“We are not seeking self-sufficiency, but rather the capacity to overcome challenges and maintain our greatest wealth, agribusiness, thriving and competitive, which ensures food security for Brazil and the world. Our demand for nutrients for plants is proportional to the greatness of our agriculture. But we will have our external dependency significantly reduced”
Minister Tereza Cristina, Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food Supply (2022) in a statement to the press
The plan also expands the possibilities for using emerging fertilizers, such as organominerals and organic fertilizers enriched with minerals. Furthermore, it allows the use of bioinputs and biomolecules such as remineralizers and nanomaterials.
Other measures adopted include visits from Embrapa technicians to some rural producers to address issues regarding the use of fertilizers and their optimization. Thus, a favorable scenario for the purchase of national inputs is anticipated, similar to what Unigel aims to achieve by purchasing Petrobras’ plant, along with a reduction in imports.
