Petrobras Will Spend R$ 435 Million on a Supercomputer That Promises to Keep the Company at the Technological Forefront. With Giant Processing Power and Focus on Eco-Efficiency, the Machine Will Be Crucial for Exploring New Frontiers of Oil and Gas, Such as the Pre-Salt.
In the digital age, the race for technological innovation is intensifying, and Petrobras does not intend to be left behind. With a billion-dollar investment, the oil giant is about to make a huge leap in its computational capacity.
The acquisition of five state-of-the-art supercomputers promises not only to keep the company at the forefront of the oil and gas sector but also to solidify its position as a leader in eco-efficiency in Latin America.
Guaranteed Technological Leadership
Over the past four years, Petrobras has led the Latin American ranking of Top500.org, which evaluates the largest High Performance Computers (HPCs) in the world.

New credit for Uber, 99, and taxi drivers can pave the way for car ownership, reduce the burden of car rental costs in their budget, and change the math for those who make a living from traffic every day.
With the new acquisition, the company plans to continue dominating this list, expanding its computational capacity while keeping sustainability as a central priority. One of the machines, with processing power equivalent to 10 million cell phones and 200 thousand laptops, will cost an impressive R$ 435 million.
Performance and Innovation of the Supercomputer
The new supercomputer will be a crucial tool for Petrobras’ geophysicists, who will use its processing power to transform raw seismic data into detailed images of the subsurface.
This will allow the company to create high-resolution 3D maps of rock layers, essential for identifying potential oil and gas reservoirs.
Precision and Efficiency in Operations
According to Sylvia Anjos, director of Exploration and Production at Petrobras, the upgrade in processing capacity will bring faster and more accurate results, especially in complex exploration areas such as the pre-salt and the Equatorial Margin.
Clarice Coppetti, director of Corporate Affairs, emphasizes that maintaining this computational capacity puts Petrobras in a globally competitive position, attracting new partnerships and business opportunities.
A Giant in Green Technology
In addition to its impressive processing capacity, the new supercomputer will also be a landmark in eco-efficiency.
With 73 PFlops and weighing around 50 tons, the machine was designed with sustainability in mind from the outset, including optimizing energy consumption in its operating room.
The supercomputer will replace the current HPCs Fênix, Atlas, and Dragão, establishing itself as the most eco-efficient in Latin America.
Strategic Partnership with Lenovo
The five new supercomputers were acquired from Lenovo, the winning bidder. The choice reflects Petrobras’ pursuit of cutting-edge technology and solutions that meet its specific processing and energy efficiency needs.
Preparing for the Future
With installation expected to start later this year and operations beginning in 2025, Petrobras positions itself not only as a leader in the oil and gas sector but also as a company looking to the future, investing in innovation and sustainability.
Do you believe that this investment in technology will provide Petrobras with a global competitive advantage in the oil and gas sector?
