First Export Test of Pluspetrol Marks Progress of Argentine Gas Towards Brazil, with Plans to Expand Production in Vaca Muerta and New Shipments Scheduled for This Week

Pluspetrol began its first test of exporting unconventional natural gas from the Vaca Muerta formation, located in Argentina, to Brazil on April 18. The operation was carried out through Gas Bridge, the company’s marketing arm in the Brazilian market.

This move marks the fourth attempt by gas marketers to start imports of Argentine gas to Brazil this month.

Companies like MTX Natural Gas Trading, Edge, and MGás have also initiated similar operations, mainly through Bolivia.

The import of Argentine gas is seen as a strategy to increase the energy supply in the region, especially considering the high demand and logistical challenges faced by both countries.

Pablo Campana, commercial manager of Pluspetrol, told the agency Eixos that the export test was successful and the company is already preparing to send a new shipment to Brazil this week.

However, the operation occurs within a limited timeframe, as the import window for natural gas in Brazil is expected to close with the arrival of winter. During the coldest season, the demand for gas tends to increase, which limits the import capacity.

The initial operation, conducted intermittently, aims to serve a specific client, whose name has not been disclosed. Campana also mentioned that, despite the current logistical difficulties, Pluspetrol intends to increase production in the La Calera block in Vaca Muerta, with plans to raise output from 10 million cubic meters per day to 15 million by 2025, with the potential to reach 25 million cubic meters per day in the future.

Despite the initial success, industry experts believe that regular imports of Argentine gas by Brazil will fully materialize in the coming years as infrastructure projects and logistical solutions are intensified.
