Starting today, toll rates on BR-153 will increase, while the Vale-Pedรกgio will become electronic starting in January. With the promise of modernization and fewer lines, the changes bring extra costs for drivers. Understand how these new rules impact your pocket and the future of Brazilian highways.
Starting this Wednesday, drivers will face important changes on the BR-153 highway, with toll rate adjustments and a new payment method that promises to have an impact. Understand how these changes can affect your pocket and your routine.
Starting at midnight this Wednesday, December 25, 2024, the toll rates at the four plazas managed by Triunfo Transbrasiliana, the concessionaire responsible for the Sรฃo Paulo section of BR-153, will be readjusted.
As authorized by the National Land Transportation Agency (ANTT) and published in the Official Gazette of the Union on December 20, the basic fare for cars, buses and trucks will rise from R$9,40 to R$9,60.

Motorcycles, scooters and motorized bicycles will pay R$4,80, representing an increase in relation to the current R$4,70.
Where will the new values โโbe applied?
Drivers who travel through the toll plazas located in Onda Verde (km 35+800), Josรฉ Bonifรกcio (km 98+900), Lins (km 183+800) and Vera Cruz (km 268+100) should prepare for the new prices.
These adjustments take into account the variation in the Broad Consumer Price Index (IPCA) and financial adjustments to cover investments made by the concessionaire in works and services.
According to ANTT, the measure seeks to maintain the economic and financial balance of the concession contract.
New rule for Toll Pass
In addition to the adjustment, another significant change will affect drivers from January 1, 2025.
The mandatory Toll Voucher, widely used by transporters, will now be accepted exclusively in electronic format, through automatic payment TAGs.
Cards can still be used normally until December 31, 2024. Coupons, currently issued on paper, will be accepted until January 31, 2025.
After this period, only electronic technology will be in force.
According to ANTT Resolution No. 6.024/2024, this transition aims to modernize the toll collection system, providing greater efficiency, safety and agility at toll plazas.
The expectation is that the change will also help reduce waiting times, especially during peak times.
Impacts on drivers' daily lives
With rising fares, many drivers may face additional financial challenges, especially those who frequently use BR-153 for work or transporting goods.
The new electronic system of Toll Voucher, although modern, also requires adaptation, as drivers and transporters will have to invest in TAGs, if they do not already have them.
These changes mark another chapter in the process of modernizing Brazilian highways. However, they raise questions about accessibility and the additional costs faced by users.
How will these changes impact drivers in the long term? And will they actually deliver the promised benefits?

Then the IPVA would have to be extinguished
IPVA is a charge levied by Brazilian states based on vehicle ownership and is not related to toll fees, as described in the article in question.
What a shame for Brazil and the potholes continue, bad road with no shoulder, third lane and duplication
The readjustment of the toll rate on BR-153 and the change to the electronic Toll Voucher aim to maintain the economic and financial balance of the concession contract and modernize the toll collection system, a quite natural objective for ANTT and the concessionaire responsible for the Sรฃo Paulo section of BR-153. With these changes, drivers will need to adapt to new prices and payment methods.
