The First Offshore Hybrid Boat in Brazil, CBO Wiser, Received a Battery Bank, Using Diesel and Electricity and Promises a Significant Reduction in CO2 Emissions.
Equinor, together with CBO and Wärtsilä, completed the hybridization project of the vessel CBO Wiser. This hybrid vessel received a battery bank, allowing the combined use of diesel and electric power, leading to a potential hybrid boat of CO2 emissions. The integration of this technology represents an important advance in the search for more sustainable solutions in the offshore sector.
Moreover, these innovations are expected to have a considerable impact on global emissions. The hybridization project, which transformed a traditional offshore boat into a hybrid vessel, exemplifies the synergy possible among different technologies. The CBO Wiser, now as a hybrid boat, symbolizes a crucial evolution, pointing towards a future where the reduction of pollutant emissions is increasingly realistic and achievable.
Hybrid Vessel Initiative in Brazil
The hybrid boat, of the PSV (platform supply vessel) type, underwent a significant transformation with the installation of a battery bank. Now, this hybrid boat uses both diesel and electric power in its operations. With this innovative initiative, a significant reduction in the CO2 emissions of the hybrid vessel is projected, reaching up to 30%. This pioneering project is a milestone for Brazil.

‘Brazil plays a crucial role in Equinor’s strategy. Here, we have made significant progress in our mission to reduce CO2 emissions globally. The conversion of this hybrid vessel is a tangible example of this goal. Through projects of this type and other similar initiatives, we will continue our journey towards carbon neutrality by 2050′, says Paulo Henrique Van Der Ven, Shared Operations Director of Equinor in Brazil.
Collaboration and Pioneering
The collaboration among three companies enabled the CBO Wiser to become the first hybrid vessel in Brazil to carry out this type of installation. Additionally, it is only the second hybrid propulsion vessel operating in the offshore oil & gas segment. The first hybrid vessel, PSV Delta Commander, began operations in December 2023, also serving Equinor in the Bacalhau field.
PSV boats play a vital role, transporting supplies and equipment from the mainland to the offshore units necessary for the operation of the assets. Equinor, an international energy company committed to a low carbon future, leads these advances.
The Importance of Equinor and Its Projects
With a diverse portfolio that includes oil, gas, renewable energy, and low-carbon solutions, Equinor is the main operator on the Norwegian continental shelf and the largest gas supplier to Europe. In Brazil, a strategic country for the company, Equinor’s growing portfolio includes assets in oil and gas (O&G) and renewable energy.
In the O&G sector, the company has projects in development, such as Raia and Bacalhau, as well as producing assets like Peregrino and Roncador. Regarding renewable energy, Equinor has ventures in solar energy, with the Apodi and Mendubim solar plants operating.
The Future of Renewable Energies in Brazil
In 2023, Equinor acquired Rio Energy, a leader in onshore renewable energy in Brazil. This acquisition complements the company’s ambitions to strengthen its presence in the country’s renewable energy market. The acceleration of these projects is a clear demonstration of Equinor’s commitment to moving towards sustainability and carbon neutrality.
The initiative of hybrid vessels, such as hybrid boats, hybrid ships, and hybrid vessels, is just one facet of Equinor’s ongoing efforts to innovate and lead the transition to a more sustainable and low-carbon future. This commitment is clearly reflected in the company’s actions and strategic direction, prevailing across all its operations.
