According to what was published by the portal Diário do Litoral, these devices utilize Doppler technology, which is already widely used by security forces on highways, especially in enforcement with mobile radar guns.
The major innovation, however, is the application of this technology in fixed radars installed in urban and highway areas since 2019, a move that has brought benefits for both enforcement efficiency and road maintenance.
A Technology That Adapts and Brings More Efficiency
The main difference between traditional radars and the new Doppler models lies in the way data is collected.
While old radars required the installation of wire sensors under the asphalt, Doppler radars operate in a completely different way.
They are equipped with suspended modules that emit radio waves to calculate vehicle speed.
This allows the roads to be resurfaced or renovated without compromising radar operation, eliminating the need for long and costly works to reinstall ground sensors.
For example, in the Lapa neighborhood of São Paulo, the old 2015 radar on Barão de Jundiaí street was replaced by a Doppler model in 2024, after the road was resurfaced.
The new system continued to operate normally, demonstrating the advantage of a model that does not depend on pavement infrastructure.
Moreover, each lane is monitored by a dedicated module, which detects vehicle speed in real-time, without the need for physical interaction with the ground.
This not only makes the system more robust but also increases safety, as it is harder to evade enforcement with this type of radar.
More Precise Infraction Detection and Hard to Evade
One of the greatest advantages of Doppler technology is its ability to detect infractions with much greater precision.
Compared to old radars, these sensors are more effective in detecting vehicles that attempt to evade enforcement, such as motorcyclists who pass on the shoulder or even on the sidewalk.
Doppler radars can identify infractions in various situations, which increases the number of fines issued and, consequently, enhances safety on the roads.
When the radar detects that a vehicle is exceeding the speed limit, the system automatically triggers the camera installed on top of the pole, which captures images of the offender, even at night.
This camera uses its own flashes, ensuring that enforcement is not hindered by a lack of light.
The entire process, from reading the vehicle’s license plate to electronically certifying the infraction, is done entirely automatically, without the need for human intervention.
More Than a Speed Radar
In addition to monitoring speed, these radars have additional functions that make enforcement even more comprehensive.
They can identify other types of infractions, such as disrespecting vehicle rotation and the circulation of vehicles in restricted areas, like zones limited for trucks.
This means that the modernization of radars goes beyond simple speed enforcement, expanding the scope of road safety and improving traffic control in urban areas.
The innovation is not limited to São Paulo.
In other countries, even more advanced radars are already in operation, such as models that can identify mobile phone use while driving and even lack of seat belt.
These extremely advanced systems are expected to arrive in Brazil in the coming years, further enhancing the efficiency of traffic enforcement.

One of the major advantages of Doppler technology is its ability to adapt to different types of roads and weather conditions.
According to manufacturers, these radars can be installed on any type of road, regardless of the width of the road or the condition of the pavement.
