The New Radio Telescope, Which Is Under Construction, Will Be Installed in Serra de Urubu, Paraíba, and Will Be Able to Map Dark Energy from the Sky
The new radio telescope, which is under construction, aims to decipher secrets of the early universe and the enigmatic dark matter, and will be installed in the region of Serra do Urubu, in the state of Paraíba, covering an area of 345 km² and a population of approximately 5,500 inhabitants. The project, called “Bingo”, will not only be an attraction for the city and region but also the center of attention for researchers from around the world. The Construction of the Radio Telescope in the State of Paraíba
This project for the construction of the radio telescope, which will be installed in Paraíba, was conceived to study the “echoes” emitted in the early moments of the universe. It will also investigate the famous fast radio bursts (FRB), which are very intense radio signals that still intrigue the scientific community. The clear sky of the sertão is a crucial factor for the mission’s success.
The project has international participation from countries such as the United Kingdom, France, South Africa, and China, but the main funding agency is FAPESP (São Paulo Research Foundation), with the construction coordinators being Brazilians Élcio Abdalla (USP), Carlos Alexandre Wuensche (INPE), and Luciano Barosi de Lemos (EFCG).

The Activities of the Project
The Bingo radio telescope, also nicknamed “Diamond of the Sertão”, could become the attraction in the municipality of Paraíba and the surrounding areas and spark people’s interest in two subjects that many consider distant from reality: astronomy and cosmology.
The project, which is under construction, will have dark energy as the focus of its discoveries. In the sertão of Paraíba, far from pollution, it will be possible to learn more about unknown structures of the galaxy, pulsars that still need observation, and new signals from space.
Elcio Abdalla, project coordinator of the construction in Paraíba and professor at the Institute of Physics at the University of São Paulo (IF-USP), says that about 95% of the universe’s energy content is completely unknown. According to him, the BINGO radio telescope will look at the detailed distribution of known matter to check the links with the dark sector.

The new wind farm in Paraíba could start construction in July, generating several job vacancies for the project works. The government of the state signed, on April 27, a protocol of interactions with the company EDF Renewables – a company operating in the renewable energy sector.
The project plans to build the wind farm in the municipalities of Santa Luzia and Junco do Seridó, located in the Sertão of Paraíba. The expectation is that the project will generate more than 600 jobs directly and indirectly, with investments of around R$ 1 billion, says the government of Paraíba. With the construction of the wind farm, the project will be the first by EDF Renewables in the state of Paraíba.
