The State of Santa Catarina Set a Record in Foreign Trade in 2022, with Exports of US$12 Billion, an Increase of 16.2% Compared to 2021.
“The record exports reflect a combination of factors. Among them, the international appreciation of our products, the diversification of our business partners, the expansion of sales of high-value-added technology-intensive products, and the level of competitiveness in the sector,” highlights the president of the entity, Mario Cezar de Aguiar.
See which products helped Santa Catarina to break the record in foreign trade in 2022. The main exported products that led Santa Catarina to set the record in foreign trade in that year were chicken meat (US$ 1.9 billion), followed by pork (US$ 1.3 billion), electric motors (US$ 711.9 million), soybeans (US$ 643.7 million), and motor parts (US$ 545.7 million). Items with the largest increases compared to 2021 amounted to US$ 335.6 million.
The second largest growth in 2022 will be in electric motors, with external sales of US$ 228.3 million more than the previous year, and kraft paper at US$ 120.8 million. Regarding the main destinations of Santa Catarina’s exports, the United States continues to be the largest consumer of Santa Catarina’s products (US$ 2.1 billion), followed by China (US$ 1.6 billion), Argentina (US$ 820.1 million), and Chile (US$ 605.1 million).

Aguiar recalled that while the trade balance of the state was negative, imports from Santa Catarina were positive due to the high volume of international purchases. They boost the port and state economy through a wide range of on-demand services, generating many jobs and also creating tax revenue.
Refined copper was the product that stood out the most in Santa Catarina’s international purchases (US$ 1.2 billion), followed by semiconductors (US$ 855.4 million), nitrogen fertilizers (US$ 827.9 million), flat-rolled iron products (US$ 745.9 million), and polyethylene polymers (US$ 605.7 million). Among the state’s main trading partners, China continues to lead with US$ 11.5 billion in trade in 2022, followed by Chile (US$ 1.9 billion), the United States (US$ 1.8 billion), Argentina (US$ 1.8 billion), and Germany (US$ 1.1 billion).
