Schneider Electric, globally known for its leadership in the digital transformation of automation and energy management, announced its significant contribution to the restoration of the iconic Notre-Dame Cathedral, located in Paris, France. Through important donations, the company ensures the safety and monitoring of the electrical installations of the famous monument.

Among the solutions provided by the corporation is the advanced Building Management System (known as BMS), an innovative technology that allows for the optimization of energy consumption of the cathedral. This system represents a significant leap by incorporating contemporary innovations into a monument that is one of the greatest examples of medieval art and has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1991.

Fire Response and Positive Impact of the Contribution

On April 15, 2019, a devastating fire seriously compromised the structure of the cathedral, triggering a wave of international solidarity. Schneider Electric was one of the companies that promptly mobilized to help. Gilles Vermot Desroches, the company’s Director of Citizenship and Institutional Affairs, expressed that it is natural for Schneider to support efforts at prestigious locations, as has been done at the historic Comédie-Française theater, also in Paris, and at the scientific station in Antarctica.

In the context of this collaboration, Schneider Electric entered into a donation agreement, offering its know-how, products, and solutions for the continuation of the project. The corporation not only provided essential equipment but also ensured the electrical safety of the location after the fire.

Advanced Technology in Management and Electrical Safety

Actively participating in the restoration, the company delivered crucial equipment, such as high-voltage cells, transformers, and electrical panels, as well as emergency lighting systems. These technological solutions are essential for efficient and safe management of the electrical installations, integrating an automatic control system with state-of-the-art sensors and controllers.

Additionally, Schneider Electric is involved in maintaining the electrical distribution network, providing support from engineering development and studies to commissioning and programming of the new systems installed. To ensure a complete technical understanding, future operators are being trained by the company. After the fire, the cathedral’s old electrical network became unusable, making this new installation vital for its reopening.

State-of-the-Art Fire Safety Solutions

To effectively address fire safety issues, the project team chose innovative solutions, including sophisticated protection devices, such as the Acti9 Active AFDD, and HeatTags sensors for continuous monitoring in the electrical panels. Such technologies ensure the controlled operation of the electrical installations, sending alerts at the slightest sign of difficulty.

The project faced considerable technical challenges, including the installation of a 3.2-ton TRIHAL transformer, specially designed for the cathedral. It was transported with care and precision, requiring complex logistical planning. This was just one of the many obstacles overcome by Schneider Electric’s team, which demonstrated resilience and innovation.

Logistical Challenges and Partnerships in Project Implementation

Additionally, the assembly of the high-voltage substation in an underground cellar was a problem on its own, resolved with specialized equipment custom-made by the team. The realignment of all these efforts required meticulous coordination, as explained by Cédric Larcher, the regional manager responsible for controlling and monitoring operations on-site.

About 60 company employees, from technicians to engineers, were intensely involved in the commissioning and operation of the new systems, significantly contributing to the technical training needed within the project. This support included training local partners, who were crucial to the success of the restoration effort.
