Cable Cut Between Sweden and Latvia Is the Fourth Incident in the Baltic Sea in Months and Raises Alerts in NATO. Know Everything!
The climate of tension in the Baltic Sea shows no signs of easing. At the end of January, a new submarine data cable between Sweden and Latvia was damaged, marking the fourth recent incident in the region. This direct attack on critical infrastructure reinforces fears of sabotage, especially at a critical time for Baltic countries, according to the site Xataka.
Broken Cable Between Sweden and Latvia Concerns NATO
The damage was classified as significant by Latvia’s Prime Minister, Evika Siliņa, who stated that there are serious allegations that it was caused by an “external force”. The Swedish government has already confirmed the damages and is collaborating with Latvia and NATO to investigate the case.
Authorities seized a suspicious boat near the cable at the time of the cut and monitored other vessels in the area.

Sequence of Suspicious Incidents in the Baltic
This is not an isolated case. Here are the latest episodes:

These events coincide with the plan of the three Baltic nations – Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania – to disconnect from the old Soviet electrical grid and integrate into the European network in February, a move seen as the last step to cut ties with Russia.
NATO Intensifies Protection with Drones, Submarines, and Aircraft
In light of the suspicions, NATO launched operation “Baltic Sentry”, mobilizing drones, boats and submarines to patrol the region. The United Kingdom, in turn, is sending its P-8 Poseidon submarine aircraft to enhance surveillance.
Although repairing the fiber optic cables takes only a few weeks, the high number of incidents in a short period worries European leaders. Lithuania’s Defense Minister has called for an urgent review of navigation rules in the Baltic, especially regarding the use of anchors by foreign vessels.
