Protests Against CEO Ignite Rejection of Factory and Showroom Project in Australian City
Tesla plans to build a new factory and showroom in Marion, a small town with only 4,101 residents on the outskirts of Adelaide, South Australia. The chosen site is an old reserve that has been closed to the public since 2016 due to environmental contamination — the project aims to clean and revitalize it, along with creating up to 100 jobs, according to Electrek.
Despite this, the proposal has generated massive rejection among residents. And the reason? Elon Musk.
“Because Elon Musk is a *” – say outraged residents
According to The Guardian, over 900 comments were sent to the city hall about the project — and 95% of them were against. Among the residents closest to the affected area, only 11 people expressed support, compared to 121 opposed.

Many of these comments directly point to the controversial figure of Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, as the main reason for the refusal. Some messages, filled with offensive language and written in public records, label Musk as a “tree destroyer,” “wicked,” and even “a [redacted] human being”.
Environmental and Social Criticism Intensifies Opposition in Australia
The project would require the removal of sick and dead trees, promising to compensate with new plantings. Still, residents deemed the proposal as an attack on nature and the city’s image.
Statements like “an ugly temple and planet destroyer for billionaires” reflect the emotional and symbolic tone of the opposition. Some local residents also argue that other companies could better utilize the area, without the “negative burden” associated with Tesla and its CEO.
Musk Affects Tesla’s Image Worldwide — Including in Australia
The backlash against Elon Musk’s project is yet another sign of the negative impact that Elon Musk’s figure has had on Tesla’s global image. Controversial statements, Nazi salutes, support for white supremacists, and involvement in ultra-conservative politics have driven away customers and sparked protests in various countries.
In Australia, Tesla sales under Elon Musk have significantly declined, even with the overall growth of the electric vehicle sector. Companies are also avoiding partnerships with the brand, citing dissatisfaction with Musk’s public stance.
