New Agreement Between Singapore and Thyssenkrupp Foresees Expansion of the Type 218SG Submarine Fleet with Advanced Technology and Focus on Strategic Maritime Defense.
The German company Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) signed a new contract with the government of Singapore on Wednesday, (7), for the construction of two additional Type 218SG submarines, expanding the fleet of the Asian country’s Navy.
The agreement consolidates the long-standing cooperation between the two nations in the naval defense sector, reinforcing TKMS’s position as a provider of cutting-edge submarine technology.
Advanced Submarines Strengthen Singapore’s Strategic Capacity
Designed with a focus on tactical performance, the Type 218SG is considered one of the most sophisticated diesel-electric submarines ever developed.

China is designing a container ship with a thorium nuclear reactor that will operate for 40 years without refueling, and the 25,000-container giant from Jiangnan Shipyard will cross oceans without emitting carbon in an industry that burns 300 million tons of fuel per year.
Measuring about 70 meters in length and displacing 2,000 tons, the model is optimized for prolonged missions in both deep and shallow waters.
Among the main differentiators of the Type 218SG are:
- Airlift Independent Propulsion (AIP), which allows submerged operation for long periods;
- High automation and superior maneuverability, which reduce the need for crew and increase operational precision;
- Low acoustic and radar signature, making it difficult for adversaries to detect;
- Enhanced payload capacity, for additional weapons and sensors.
Production Will Be Carried Out at Existing Facilities in Germany
Even with a full production schedule until the 2040s, Thyssenkrupp has ensured that the manufacturing of the new submarines will be done without the need for physical expansion of the shipyards.
The company highlights that its current structure is already prepared to absorb the new demand while maintaining quality standards and stipulated deadlines.
Singapore already operates units of the Type 218SG class, resulting from a program developed jointly by German engineers and Singaporean specialists, aiming to adapt the submarine to the specific needs of the Southeast Asian region.
Thyssenkrupp Reaches Record Contract Portfolio
With the signing of this new agreement, Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems’ contract portfolio reaches its highest volume ever recorded, reflecting the constant growth of the company’s maritime defense sector.
The CEO of TKMS, Oliver Burkhard, commented on the significance of the new agreement:
“We are proud that Singapore has once again placed its trust in us. Our partnership goes beyond submarine construction; we feel a deep connection with the country and contribute our solutions to its security and defense.”
The German manufacturer Thyssenkrupp thus reinforces its global leadership in naval security solutions, focusing on innovation, precision engineering, and lasting strategic alliances.
