BYD Announces Autonomous Driving System “God’s Eye” For All Electric Models, Including The Seagull, At No Extra Cost

BYD is set to equip all of its electric vehicles with autonomous driving technology. The announcement was made early last week during a live event at the company’s headquarters in Shenzhen, China.

Autonomous Driving For Everyone

According to the newspaper FT, BYD’s CEO and founder, Wang Chuanfu, emphasized the importance of innovation. “We are starting an era where autonomous driving is for everyone,” he stated. According to him, the technology will be an essential item in the next two to three years, just like a seatbelt or airbag.

“God’s Eye” System In All Models

The company plans to install its autonomous driving system, called God’s Eye, across its entire line of vehicles. This includes the Seagull hatchback, which cost around US$ 9,700 and has repeatedly led sales in China over the past year, even surpassing Tesla’s models.

Currently, BYD offers driving assistance features only in premium models, which cost over US$ 30,000. Now, with this change, the technology will be available at no extra cost. According to Fortune, the system will include features such as:

  • Autonomous Highway Navigation
  • Automatic Parking
  • Assisted Overtaking
  • Dominant Braking

The announcement comes shortly after the merger between Nissan and Honda was canceled following a month of negotiations. Both Japanese automakers, which are already familiar with the global automotive sector, face challenges due to the advancement of electric vehicles.

When Will It Hit The Market?

BYD has not specified when the “God’s Eye” autonomous driving system will be available in their models, nor will it be activated in cars already sold. However, the Straits Times highlighted that the company secured the first level 3 assisted driving testing license in China.

Meanwhile, Tesla is awaiting authorization to test its own autonomous driving features in the country. To maintain its lead, BYD will need to act quickly.
