Technology developed since 2018 replaces liquid electrolyte with solid material, undergoes extreme tests in China, and reinforces the race for safer, lighter, and more efficient electric vehicles

Dongfeng Motor has revealed that it is preparing to mass-produce a solid-state battery capable of exceeding 1,000 km of range. According to the Chinese automaker, the technology has an energy density of 350 Wh/kg and is expected to hit the market in 2027.

One of China’s oldest manufacturers, Dongfeng recorded 2.47 million vehicles sold in 2025. Now, the company is aiming for a new stage of electrification with a component designed to deliver more range, more safety, and less weight compared to conventional batteries.

Dongfeng’s solid-state battery promises more safety in electric vehicles

The main difference of the new battery is the replacement of the liquid electrolyte with a solid electrolyte. In traditional lithium-ion batteries, the liquid material can increase risks in cases of collision, overheating, or severe failures.

In practice, the change reduces the possibility of combustion and explosions. Additionally, the technology can decrease the weight of the assembly, an important factor for improving efficiency and performance in electric vehicles.

With this, Dongfeng is trying to advance in one of the most competitive areas of the global automotive industry. After all, range remains among the main points analyzed by consumers interested in electric cars.

Extreme tests included cold of -30°C and temperature up to 170°C

Dongfeng’s battery was subjected to various endurance tests. Among the tests, the automaker cites trials conducted in Mohe, in northern China, a city known for recording temperatures close to -30°C.

Additionally, the system also withstood temperature tests up to 170°C. This level is above the requirements established by Chinese standards for this type of component.

Thus, the company seeks to prove that the battery can operate in severe conditions. The proposal is to ensure stability in both extreme cold environments and high-temperature scenarios.

Project started in 2018 and gained forecast for 2027

The development of the technology began in 2018, when Dongfeng created a group dedicated to researching solid-state batteries. Since then, the automaker has invested in the evolution of this type of solution for electric vehicles.

According to the company, the next generation of the battery is expected to hit the market in 2027. This date places Dongfeng among the Chinese manufacturers seeking to accelerate the race for denser, safer, and more efficient batteries.

Even so, the promise depends on the advancement of mass production. This point will be decisive in transforming the technology into a viable component for cars sold on a large scale.
