Without School Buses in the West Zone of Macapá, Grandfather Uses Recycling Cart and Neighborhood School in Trilho Has Empty Classrooms
The classrooms of Escola Municipal Gerson Trindade, in the Trilho neighborhood, are emptying due to the lack of school transportation. According to a report from the Seles Nafes portal, published in February 2026, most children cannot reach the school without the buses that used to serve the community.
Parents were informed that two buses servicing the route are out of order and there is no estimate for their return. The school is located in the west zone of Macapá, near Marabaixo, with access via Rodovia AP-440 (Ramal do KM-9), which worsens the dependence on school transport.
In this scenario, a recycling collector identified as Seu Manoel has been taking his granddaughter to school using his own collection cart. The route begins in Marabaixo III, on 12th Avenue, and is repeated every weekday, according to the report.

The school, which has been operating for about 20 years, has more than 500 children enrolled for the 2026 school year, according to the community. Besides the lack of transportation, the access road is covered in mud and potholes, which makes it even harder for students and staff to arrive.
School Transport Halted in Macapá, Empty Classrooms at Escola Gerson Trindade
According to Seles Nafes, the classrooms are “becoming increasingly empty” due to the suspension of school buses. Without public alternatives, families that rely on the service are unable to take their children to school, jeopardizing attendance and learning.
For 2026, the school has more than 500 enrollments, but daily attendance drops when transportation fails. The administration and the community report that the problem particularly affects those living farther away, such as in Marabaixo, where many students have no other means of transportation.
Broken Buses and Poor Access Hinder Students’ Arrival
According to parents, the two buses on the route have broken down and no timeline for repairs has been provided. The uncertainty prevents families from planning and exposes children to long and unsafe journeys.
The access road to the school is in poor condition, with a lot of mud and potholes, which also discourages private transportation and increases the risk of accidents. On rainy days, the situation worsens and vehicle movement becomes limited.
Without regular service, the school is experiencing a cycle of absences and delays early in the 2026 school year. The presence of students in class, a basic condition for learning, is compromised by a logistical factor that should be guaranteed by the public authorities.
Residents stated that the community was only informed about the breakdown of the vehicles, without technical details or a timeline for normalization. The lack of clear information raises the anxiety of families and undermines confidence in a quick resolution of the problem.
The Trilho neighborhood is adjacent to Marabaixo and relies on access via AP-440 (Ramal do KM-9), a route where the distances and poor road conditions make school buses even more essential. Without transportation, young children are literally left without a way.
Grandfather Takes Granddaughter in Recycling Cart, Routine Revealing Urgency
While the fleet is grounded, Seu Manoel, a collector of recyclable materials, improvises his granddaughter’s transportation using his own collection cart. He leaves Marabaixo III, via 12th Avenue, and claims to demand the return of the buses daily, but nothing progresses.
The physical effort and the risk on the route expose the vulnerability of families and the lack of safe alternatives. Besides the strain, the child faces an irregular route, subject to mud and potholes, in conditions that do not align with the right to education.
The case, documented by the report in February, symbolizes the urgency for a solution and highlights how the lack of school transportation directly affects classroom attendance. The images credited to journalist Eliane Dias reinforce the abandoned state of the route.
Recent History of Interruptions Increases Strain with the City Hall
In November 2025, the school was closed for two weeks and, according to Seles Nafes, parents were not informed by the City Hall of Macapá about the reasons. At that time, dozens of mothers protested in front of the school, demanding transparency and regularity.
The repetition of failures, now with broken buses and no predictions for repairs, heightens the strain between the community and public authorities. The accumulation of interruptions underscores the need for an emergency plan and clear communication to ensure the right to education.
And you, what do you think? Should the City Hall prioritize the immediate recovery of the fleet and the improvement of access roads, or is there another more effective solution for the Trilho neighborhood and Marabaixo? Is the recycling cart as a temporary solution acceptable, or does it reveal a problem that can no longer be tolerated?
