A time capsule of great historical value will be buried in the United States to preserve a portrait of the nation in 2026.
The structure weighs 408 kg, equivalent to 900 pounds, and will be placed under the ground in Philadelphia on July 4, 2026, during the celebrations of the 250th anniversary of American independence.
The project was conceived by America250, a commission created by determination of the United States Congress to organize the celebrations of the country’s semiquincentennial.

Technical protection against time
The capsule was developed with the support of engineers from the National Institute of Standards and Technology of the United States, NIST.
Michael Berilla, director of the institute’s manufacturing technology office, explained that moisture represents the greatest risk for this type of structure.
The cylinder received stainless steel and a special seal made with indium, a soft metal capable of filling microscopic gaps.
The solution creates a hermetic barrier against water and air, increasing the chances of preservation for two and a half centuries.
Popular Science magazine reported that the structure was designed to withstand floods and natural disasters.
The capsule will be buried about three meters deep in the Independence National Historical Park in Philadelphia.
National treasures inside the capsule
The content gathers symbolic, natural, historical, and technological items sent from different parts of the United States.
Among the highlighted objects are a whale bone sent by Maine, an eagle feather used in the Civil War, sent by Wisconsin, and a special copy of the Declaration of Independence.
Smithsonian Magazine highlighted one of the most curious elements of the project.
The Library of Congress has prepared a version of the Declaration of Independence encoded in synthetic DNA, a technology used to store digital data on a microscopic scale.
This type of storage can last thousands of years without constant maintenance, according to the explanation presented in the report.
Monument will mark the burial site
The exact burial point will be marked by the sculpture “Join or Die”, inspired by a famous drawing by Benjamin Franklin.
The work references the union of the American colonies and reinforces the historical symbolism of the initiative.
Rosie Rios, president of America250, stated that the goal is to show descendants who the Americans of 2026 were.
The capsule does not function merely as a repository of objects. It also represents a message planned to cross generations.
Message sent to the future
Michael Berilla left a letter inside the cylinder with a greeting sent by the people living in 2026.
The phrase describes the message as coming from the “hearts and hands” of the current generation.
The 408 kg capsule combines engineering, national memory, art, nature, and technology to tell a story to the Americans of 2276.
The project transforms the 250th anniversary of the United States into a symbolic bridge between past, present, and future.
When opened, 250 years from now, the structure may reveal how American society in 2026 decided to present its identity, symbols, and achievements to future generations.
