Warren Buffett said his success depended on an almost free college course he took when he was afraid. See how this decision transformed his career and what you can learn from this story!

Warren Buffett, one of the most respected and successful investors in the world, has a history of actively participating in the annual shareholder meetings of his company, Berkshire Hathaway. However, what many don’t know is that Buffett did not always have the ability to communicate with confidence in front of large audiences, and one course changed everything.

In fact, the fear of public speaking was a significant obstacle early in his career, which he only managed to overcome thanks to a simple course that changed his trajectory.

The Paralyzing Fear of Public Speaking

Until he was 20, Buffett had an intense fear of public speaking. He himself reported that just the idea of getting on a stage or speaking in front of others made him physically ill. “I literally vomited,” he confessed in an interview with CNBC.

This phobia led him to avoid all subjects and situations involving presentations, strategically choosing his classes in college to avoid facing the public.

This fear of public speaking was so intense that he could barely introduce himself properly when necessary. However, Buffett knew that this blockage could harm his career, and that motivated him to seek a solution.

The Solution: A Course to Learn Public Speaking

It was during his time at Columbia University that Buffett came across an advertisement for a public speaking course offered by Dale Carnegie. Initially, he signed up but dropped out even before the course started. “I was too terrified to attend,” he recalled.

However, shortly after graduating, Buffett saw the same advertisement again and decided to try again. This time, instead of just writing a check, he handed US$ 100 in cash directly to the instructor. “I knew that if I handed the money in person, there would be no turning back. I would have to go,” he said.

Buffett finally completed the course and discovered that 30 other students had the same problem he did: they all struggled to say their own names in public.

The course, which lasted 12 weeks, gave Buffett the confidence he desperately needed to face his insecurities and improve his communication skills.

Putting Skills into Practice

Shortly after finishing the course, Buffett knew he needed to continue practicing to maintain the progress he had made. He immediately applied for a teaching position at the University of Omaha, where he began to teach classes.

This was crucial in solidifying his confidence in public speaking. Since then, he has never stopped talking. “Now, you can’t make me stop talking,” he joked in an interview.

The communication skills that Buffett developed became a key element in his career, allowing him to build a network of relationships and maintain a confident posture in negotiations and speeches for Berkshire Hathaway shareholders, which contributed to his ongoing success.

The Impact of the Course on Buffett’s Career

Warren Buffett is widely recognized for his investment wisdom and his ability to communicate complex ideas simply. His business success, in part, can be attributed to the skills he developed in that public speaking course.

He has stated that the diploma from the Dale Carnegie course, which he proudly keeps in his office, is more valuable than his college degree.

Currently, Buffett is the eighth richest man in the world, with a net worth estimated at around US$ 145 billion, according to Bloomberg.

His company, Berkshire Hathaway, has consistently outperformed the market, providing compound annual returns of nearly 20% since he took control in 1965. And much of that success can be attributed to his ability to lead and communicate effectively.

Recent Moves by Buffett: Sale of Bank of America Shares

In recent months, Berkshire Hathaway has made a series of stock sales in major companies, including Bank of America (BofA). Since mid-July, Buffett’s company has sold over US$ 10 billion in shares of the bank, reducing its stake to less than 10%.

This is relevant because investors with more than a 10% ownership in a company are required to report their transactions within a much shorter timeframe, which may not always be strategic.

The sale of BofA shares began when the bank’s stocks were on the rise, after a 75% increase since last October.

Although the sale may have been a strategic adjustment to keep Berkshire’s ownership below the 10% threshold, many believe Buffett may be fully liquidating his position in the bank, as he has done before with stakes in other major banks.

Conclusion

Dale Carnegie’s public speaking course not only transformed Warren Buffett as a person but also had a lasting impact on his successful career. The investor, who started with a fear of public speaking, is now one of the most influential figures in the business world.

His recent moves in the market, such as the sale of Bank of America shares, show that the “Oracle of Omaha” continues to influence the direction of the global financial market with his strategic decisions.

Buffett’s journey is an inspiration for anyone facing challenges in their communication skills or overcoming fears, showing that, with dedication, it is possible to transform weaknesses into strengths.
