Piauí girl who ran barefoot with flip-flops in her hands became a symbol of strength in grassroots sports, gained support after going viral, and began to nurture the dream of continuing on the tracks and in futsal with more structure.

A scene captured during a street race in the interior of Piauí turned Jhenyfer Sophya into a widely recognized figure on social media, after the girl appeared running barefoot, with flip-flops in her hands.

At 11 years old, the student known in Uruçuí as Goleirinha ran more than 6 km without proper shoes and drew attention for the determination shown among the athletes participating in the sports event.

According to Piauí Hoje, Jhenyfer participated in the 2025 Street Circuit, held in Uruçuí, in southern Piauí, and covered 6.5 km during the program that marked the 123rd anniversary of the municipality.

The image gained traction on social media because it showed the girl running without proper footwear, holding the flip-flops during the course, in a spontaneous demonstration of the desire to compete and stay in the race.

Girl ran barefoot in Piauí and went viral on social media

Jhenyfer’s participation did not start as that of an officially registered athlete in a category appropriate for her age, as the available race at that time was aimed at an adult audience.

Nívea Guimarães, the girl’s mother, said she had registered for the circuit and that her daughter also wanted to run but couldn’t find a children’s category available to participate in the competition.

At the starting moment, Jhenyfer took off her flip-flops and joined the other participants, turning an old desire to run into a scene that surprised residents, athletes, and internet users.

During the course, the improvised run began to attract the attention of those following the race, mainly because the girl maintained her pace even without the appropriate footwear for the distance.

According to the mother’s account to the report, the girl arrived before many runners, despite not having proper shoes, which increased the story’s impact and moved those who saw the scene.

The episode began circulating on social media as an example of strength in grassroots sports, especially involving a child from the interior who demonstrated physical endurance and a desire to compete.

Goleirinha already had a connection with sports in Uruçuí

Before the race gained attention, Jhenyfer already had a close relationship with sports in Uruçuí, where she became known by the nickname Goleirinha due to her performance in futsal.

Her mother stated that her daughter trains at the city’s sports complex and has always shown interest in sports activities, especially in disciplines that are part of the local routine.

Although futsal was already part of the girl’s life, participating in the race revealed another possible path for Jhenyfer, who also began talking about her desire to compete as an athlete.

After the attention, the story gained a new chapter when the mayor of Uruçuí, Dr. Gilberto Júnior, gifted the student with a pair of running shoes and an athletics uniform.

In addition to providing the equipment, the mayor announced that the city hall intends to offer support so that Jhenyfer can continue in sports, with training, encouragement, and participation in competitions in the municipality and other cities in the region.

Shoes and uniform gave a new chapter to the story

For a child who ran barefoot in a race of more than 6 km, receiving a pair of running shoes represents more safety for training and better conditions for competing.

The gift also symbolizes public recognition that the talent shown during that course can be accompanied by structure, guidance, and opportunities in new sports competitions.

Jhenyfer’s journey draws attention because it combines two disciplines in the same story, bringing together futsal, where she earned the nickname Goleirinha, and street running, where she emerged unexpectedly.

On the court, the girl was already recognized for her performance as a goalkeeper, while on the streets of Uruçuí she showed the stamina to complete a distance that requires preparation even from adult participants.

Jhenyfer herself stated that she dreams of running in the Olympics and hopes to become a professional athlete with the support announced after the race gained attention in the Piauí municipality.

According to the published account, she had been asking her mother to run since she was 9 years old, but faced difficulties because the available competitions were for adults, which limited her participation in official events.

Grassroots sports in the interior gain visibility

In towns in the interior of Brazil, children interested in sports often depend on local events to be noticed, especially when they do not yet have access to ongoing projects or regular competitions.

Street races, school tournaments, and municipal championships end up serving as showcases for young people who demonstrate talent, even without permanent sports support, proper equipment, or a frequent competition calendar.

In Jhenyfer’s case, the impact began with the visual strength of the scene, but advanced to a concrete response, with a promise of support so that the girl can train with more structure.

The distance covered also helped to amplify the commotion, as running 6.5 km without appropriate shoes requires physical endurance, willingness, and confidence to keep up with the pace of an adult race.

Even under these conditions, the student followed the course and stood out among participants prepared for the race, reinforcing the attention on talents that emerge far from major sports centers.

Olympic dream was born after improvised race

Jhenyfer’s interest in sports was already part of the family routine, according to her mother, who reported her daughter’s love for sports activities and frequent practice of futsal.

This prior relationship with sports helps explain why the girl decided to run upon seeing the athletes gathered for the start, even without formal registration in a children’s category.

The spontaneous attitude turned an unexpected participation into a case of great regional reach, driven by the image of the barefoot child, with flip-flops in hand, and her endurance during the course.

The impact also reinforced the role of city halls, schools, gyms, and community events in discovering young talents, especially in municipalities where the first contact with competitive sports happens in public spaces.

For Jhenyfer, the next announced step involves the possibility of training with more support, using proper equipment, and competing with greater safety in Uruçuí and other cities in the region.

The sports path still depends on continuity, guidance, and opportunities, but the barefoot race placed the girl at the center of a story that combines childhood, talent, improvisation, and encouragement.

By taking off her flip-flops and running, Jhenyfer turned a simple scene into a demonstration of sporting will that mobilized residents, athletes, local authorities, and readers who followed the impact.

Should stories like Jhenyfer’s depend on the luck of going viral on social media or on a permanent structure capable of identifying and supporting children with talent in sports?
