With the capacity to produce up to 2 billion cubic meters of gas per day, the new well in Zohr reinforces Egypt’s role as an energy power and enhances its self-sufficiency in the Mediterranean
The Egyptian government announced the completion of drilling a new well in the natural gas field of Zohr, located in the waters of the Mediterranean Sea. The structure, according to the Minister of Petroleum, Karim Badawi, has an estimated production capacity approaching 2 billion cubic meters of gas per day.
This volume is equivalent, in oil barrels, to about 12.5 million per day — a number higher than that of exporting countries like Brazil and Canada.
The advancement reinforces Egypt’s plan to expand its energy matrix and reduce dependence on imports.

New Milestone in Energy Strategy
Badawi stated that the new well represents a milestone in national efforts to increase local production and meet growing internal demand.
“The operation establishes the foundations for the next phases of exploration and development in the Zohr field,” declared the minister, quoted by the Egyptian portal Sada El-Balad.
The Zohr field is recognized as one of the largest natural gas discoveries in the Mediterranean. Since it became operational in 2017, it has played a central role in the country’s energy strategy.
Export and Strengthened Regional Position
The exploration of Zohr has restored Egypt’s status as a natural gas exporter, as well as consolidating the country as an important regional energy hub.
The result strengthens the Egyptian government’s position in the international energy scenario, as it enhances supply security and export capacity.
New Drillings and Future Goals of Egypt
In addition to the completed drilling in Zohr, the Ministry of Petroleum has started another work in the Denise field, located about 98 meters below sea level.
The new drilling is expected to reach a depth exceeding 4,200 meters, with the aim of assessing the potential for new reserves.
These actions are part of the national plan to ensure energy self-sufficiency and sustainable growth in gas supply to the country.
