Located in Santa Cruz, East of Rio de Janeiro, Fiocruz’s New Vaccine Factory Will Generate Jobs in Civil Construction

The Oswaldo Cruz Foundation – Fiocruz, is a research and development institution in biological sciences located in the state of Rio de Janeiro. The Foundation will build a building in the western zone of the state capital, called the Fiocruz Health Biotechnology Industrial Complex. It is expected to generate 5,000 jobs in the civil construction sector.

In addition to the new jobs that will be generated during the construction of the building, 1,500 jobs may be created through comprehensive facilities for the production of vaccines and biological medications. This will be the largest immunization production center in Latin America.

The completion of the unit is expected in 2023. Last month, at an event attended by Acting Governor Cláudio Castro, the definitive contract for the land was signed, with the presence of Minister of Health Eduardo Pazuello and Nísia Trindade Lima, President of Fiocruz.

The construction will cover an area of 580,000 square meters and is provided by the Industrial Development Company of the State of Rio de Janeiro (Codin). There will be 9 buildings, including processing, packaging, storage of raw materials and finished products, quality control and quality assurance, and waste and wastewater treatment centers. All Fiocruz vaccines will be produced on-site.

Fábio Galvão, president of Codin, stated that “Fiocruz will be established in an industrial district where there is a whole perspective for new drug and vaccine productions, and it will also attract the production chain, with the need for inputs and equipment. So, besides the pandemic and public health issue, which is our focus, we will also have job and income generation for the population of Rio de Janeiro.”
