With 16.5 km of continuous ascent and over a thousand meters of elevation, Serra da Rocinha hosts a cycling event in Timbé do Sul on July 11 and 12. After ten years of construction, the highway delivered in April becomes a bet for adventure tourism and the local economy.

Serra da Rocinha, in Timbé do Sul, in the Extreme South of Santa Catarina, will be the stage for a cycling event on July 11 and 12, 2026, bringing together athletes on a route of 16.5 km of continuous ascent, with over a thousand meters of elevation.

According to NSC Total, in a report published on July 8, 2026 and updated on the same day, the event marks a new phase for regional tourism after the completion of the paving of the mountain, finished in April, after about ten years of construction.

Serra da Rocinha was for years associated with the anticipation of the completion of the work. Now, with the paving delivered to the community, the stretch is being presented as a new asset for Timbé do Sul and the Extreme South of Santa Catarina, especially in adventure tourism.

The change of phase is symbolic: the road that once represented waiting now becomes a route of movement. The 1st Serra da Rocinha Challenge 2026 and the 6th Timbeleza Bike Tour were positioned as the first major boost of this new stage, using the highway as a sports and tourist setting.

16.5 km route promises to test athletes on the ascent

The cyclists will start at Pousada e Camping Poço do Caixão and will face a route of 16.5 kilometers of continuous ascent. The accumulated elevation exceeds a thousand meters, placing the challenge among the most demanding routes for participants.

The strength of the event lies precisely in this contrast between landscape and effort. The Serra da Rocinha is not just a beautiful road on the route, but a physical challenge, with inclination, extension, and scenery capable of attracting athletes from different regions of Brazil.

Highway delivered in April changes access to the region

The paving of the Serra da Rocinha was delivered in April 2026, after a long period of construction. The improved access is seen as a decisive factor in transforming the stretch into a tourist, sports, and economic route for Timbé do Sul.

The highway’s structure is also linked to regional logistics. Images released by DNIT, cited in the report, show interventions, rock cuts, and containment along the mountain, as well as the connection between Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul through a difficult-to-access area.

Hotels, restaurants, and local commerce expect activity

For Timbé do Sul, the event weekend represents more than a sports competition. The expectation is for activity in the hotel industry, gastronomy, and local commerce, sectors that may directly feel the arrival of athletes, teams, and visitors.

Adventure tourism tends to generate impact beyond the start and finish. Accommodation, food, transportation, services, and small businesses are part of the same economic circulation chain, especially when a municipality tries to establish itself as a destination for recurring events.

Event attempts to consolidate Timbé do Sul in ecotourism

The challenge is organized by the Santa Catarina Cycling Federation and supported by the Municipal Government. The Department of Tourism, Sports, and Culture sees the action as part of the attempt to consolidate Timbé do Sul as a hub for adventure tourism and ecotourism.

This positioning depends on continuity. An event can attract attention, but tourism consolidation requires a calendar, structure, promotion, and the ability to receive visitors without losing local identity. The Serra da Rocinha emerges as a showcase, but the challenge is to turn curiosity into a permanent flow.

Cyclist residents will have special incentives

The organization also reserved an incentive for the cyclists of Timbé do Sul. According to the report, residents of the municipality will have a full exemption from the registration fee, a measure that values the community that closely followed the years of waiting for the highway.

This point helps connect the event to the local population. Instead of treating Serra da Rocinha only as a backdrop for visitors, the initiative includes those who live in the region and can directly participate in the new tourist moment that the road aims to inaugurate.

What this new phase can reveal

The Serra da Rocinha enters the tourist map with a mix of expectation and test. The highway took about a decade to be completed, was delivered in April, and is now being used as a base for an event that combines sport, landscape, and local economy.

Do you believe that major access works can transform small towns into true tourist hubs, or do events like this only generate movement for a few days? Leave your opinion in the comments and join the discussion.
