Brazilian Drivers Face Fines And Risks When Installing Prohibited Accessories, Such As Hitches, Dark Tints, Irregular Wrapping, Xenon Headlights, And Multimedia Centers

In Brazil, the passion for cars drives many drivers to invest in accessories and modifications that seem harmless. However, a significant portion of these items is not in accordance with the law and may result not only in fines but also in compromising vehicle safety.

Among them, hitches, dark tints, irregular wrapping, multimedia centers with active TV, and non-original xenon headlights stand out.

Penalties For Illegal Changes

First of all, it is important to reinforce: installing accessories without authorization or making modifications outside the rules is a serious infraction.

The driver receives five points on their driver’s license, a fine of R$ 195.23, and the vehicle is detained until proper regularization.

The same applies to changes in the original characteristics without the necessary documentation. Lowered suspension is one of the classic examples, as it requires the Vehicle Safety Certificate (CSV).

After the inspection, it is necessary to request an update to the CRLV-e, the digital registration and licensing document. This field will indicate that the vehicle received an officially approved modification.

Hitches On Vehicles Without Towing Capacity

The tow hitch is a national trend. Many drivers install the equipment without even towing anything, merely for aesthetics or the false idea that it protects during collisions.

This belief, however, is misguided. A hitch does not serve as a structural reinforcement in rear-end collisions. Additionally, several cars do not have the structure or capacity to receive the accessory.

An emblematic case was that of the previous generation Toyota Corolla, which could not use the item. If installed, the owner could receive a fine, points, and even lose the factory warranty.

Resolution 937/2022 from Contran is clear: light vehicles may have a hitch only if they can support up to 3,500 kg of Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW), which is the sum of the car’s weight, the trailer, the load, and the passengers.

Mandatory Requirements For Hitches

When the accessory is allowed, it must meet technical requirements. It needs to have an inviolable metal plate with registration at Inmetro, the manufacturer’s CNPJ, and indicate the maximum towing capacity.

It is also mandatory to have a socket for trailer lighting, a device for a safety chain, and not to present sharp corners.

Another common practice is the application of dark tints, especially the famous G5, which offers only 5% transparency.

Resolution 989/2022 establishes that front windows and windshields must have at least 70% light transmittance. The same applies to the rear window if the car does not have a right-side mirror.

In the case of rear side windows, the rule is more flexible, as long as there are external mirrors on both sides.

Each film must have a recording indicating the transparency index and an Inmetro seal. Otherwise, the driver is subject to fines, points, and vehicle detention.

Wrapping Requires Documentation Update

Changing the color of the car also follows specific rules. Wrapping is cheaper than painting but does not free the owner from legal obligations.

According to the Brazilian Traffic Code, any color change requires the issuance of a new CRLV-e. The exception is when the change does not exceed 50% of the bodywork.

Drivers who violate the regulation are subject to serious infractions and detention until regularization.

Active TV With The Car In Motion

Multimedia centers have become popular, and with them, DVD and digital TV functions. The problem is that the law only allows the use of these functions for the driver while the car is stopped.

While driving, the screen must remain locked to avoid dangerous distractions.

Resolution 242 from Contran allows use for passengers in the back seat but never for the driver.

If the system does not have the lock, the vehicle may be detained until it is compliant.

Non-Original Xenon Headlights

The last item on the list is quite controversial: xenon headlights. They are only permitted when they come from the factory or when they were installed before Resolution 926/2022, with the issuance of the CSV.

Cars caught with the adapted system after 2011, without original homologation, are in an irregular situation. The penalty is the same: severe fines, points, and detention until regularization.

Rules Exist For Safety

All these requirements may seem strict, but they have a reason. Changes made without technical criteria compromise the safety of the driver and others.

Very dark tints reduce visibility, headlights out of standard blind other drivers, and entertainment centers can distract.

Poorly installed hitches or on vehicles incapable of towing also increase the risk of accidents.

Respecting The Rules Prevents Problems

Therefore, before thinking about customizing the car, it is essential to check whether the accessory is authorized. Consulting the owner’s manual and verifying the towing capacity in the CRLV-e, when applicable, are basic steps.

Additionally, original or approved accessories offer safety and peace of mind to the driver, with no risk of fines or seizure.

Ignoring the rules can be costly. After all, it is not just about avoiding penalties but preserving one’s safety and that of everyone on the streets and roads.
