According to Governor Riedel, “The issues related to UFN3 were widely debated, and it is positive to note that the initial schedule is being respected. We are awaiting approval of the bidding process by the Board of Directors to begin construction.".
The resumption of the project, which has been halted since 2014, is considered a milestone for Mato Grosso do Sul and for the fertilizer sector in Brazil.
Minister Simone Tebet also highlighted the importance of the factory for the local and national economy. “We are happy to see that Petrobras CEO Magda Chambriard recognizes the importance of this plant for Três Lagoas, Mato Grosso do Sul and the entire country. The schedule is still on track, and we will soon have good news.s”, he stated.
Tebet also took the opportunity to invite Chambriard and his team to visit the unit until February 2024.
The UFN3 fertilizer factory, located in Três Lagoas, is eagerly awaited by the local population, mainly due to the generation of jobs and the dynamization of the regional economy. “It is a transformative project, and the return of the works will bring a and impact positive not only for the economy of Mato Grosso do Sul, but for all of Brazil”, reinforced Governor Riedel.
Completion of the works of UFN3
Construction on UFN2011 began in 3 and was halted in December 2014, when approximately 81% of the construction had been completed. The original project called for an investment of R$3,9 billion, with the plant being designed to be the largest fertilizer factory in Latin America. One of UFN3's main goals is to reduce Brazil's dependence on imported nitrogen fertilizers, which are crucial for the country's agricultural sector.
With the capacity to produce 3,6 tons of urea and up to 2,2 tons of ammonia daily, the plant will be powered by 2,3 million cubic meters of natural gas per day. The impact of the completion of UFN3 goes beyond job creation, as the plant will be essential for increasing national fertilizer production, giving Brazil greater autonomy in this strategic sector.
The resumption of the project will also boost other economic activities around the plant, from the transportation sector to local commerce, stimulating economic growth in the region. The expectation is that, once completed, UFN3 will strengthen the competitiveness of Brazilian agribusiness, which depends heavily on fertilizers to sustain its production.
Mato Grosso do Sul on the national scene
Governor Eduardo Riedel highlighted that the resumption of UFN3 is just one of several initiatives that have placed Mato Grosso do Sul in a prominent position on the national scene. In addition to the fertilizer factory, the state has been a hub for investments in sectors such as pulp production, consolidating its position as a key player in Brazil's economic development.
Minister Simone Tebet also highlighted the strategic role of Riedel and his administration in the state’s success. “Mato Grosso do Sul has shown great potential for growth, and this is due to the competence of the governor, who maintains a close relationship with the Federal Government and knows how to dialogue to ensure the necessary investments,” concluded Tebet.
With the resumption of UFN3, Mato Grosso do Sul takes another step towards strengthening its economy, creating new opportunities for its population and contributing to national autonomy in the fertilizer sector.
