Starlink activates free satellite connection for those without a cell phone signal, even in remote regions

Anyone who has ever struggled in areas without a cell phone signal knows how bad it is to be without communication. Now, that time may be numbered. Starlink, a company owned by Elon Musk, has started offering free internet via satellite to those in places without carrier coverage. The news was announced by Estadão's E-Investidor platform.

Service is still limited, but it already allows you to send messages and use real-time location. This can be useful in emergencies or even when traveling to more remote regions. The name of the signal that appears on your phone in these cases is “T-Mobile SpaceX”.

Starlink's proposal is simple: if your cell phone has no signal and the location has access to open skies, the device can automatically connect to the company's satellite network. There is no need to have a new chip or pay for an extra plan. The signal is emergency, but it can save in critical situations.

For now, the connection allows:

  • Send and receive text messages;
  • Share your location with contacts;
  • Call emergency services, such as police or rescue.

Starlink has already announced that, in the future, it will also release voice calls and full internet access for those using the satellite connection.

Which cell phones work with this internet?

Not every device can connect to the Starlink network. According to the Estadão article, the compatible models are:

  • iPhones 14 or newer
  • Google Pixel 9
  • Samsung Galaxy A14

The mobile phone system must be up to date and the emergency mobile networks function must be activated in the settings.

Need to pay something?

Access is completely free, as explained on the Starlink website and confirmed by the E-Investidor report. But it is worth remembering: the internet only works in places without a signal from conventional operators. In other words, you cannot use this connection all the time, only when you are really isolated.
