Drone Attack Hits Port in the Black Sea, Triggers Fire in Oil Tank, Injures at Least Two and Occurs Days Before US-Mediated Negotiations in Geneva, on the Eve of the Fourth Anniversary of the Invasion Beginning on February 22, Raising Regional Tension
A fire broke out in a Russian port on the Black Sea on Sunday after a Ukrainian drone attack, injuring at least two people, days before new US-mediated negotiations to try to end the war that has lasted nearly four years.
Attack in the Black Sea Hits Taman Port and Damages Oil Tanks
The attack occurred at the Taman port in the Krasnodar region of the Black Sea and damaged an oil storage tank, a warehouse, and terminals, according to regional governor Veniamin Kondratyev. At least two people were injured.
According to Reuters, Kondratyev stated that more than 100 people were working to extinguish several fires at the Black Sea port. He added that strikes also hit the tourist city of Sochi and the village of Yurovka, causing less significant damage.

Authorities reported that the fire was caused by a Ukrainian drone attack. The incident comes just days before a new round of US-mediated negotiations between envoys from Russia and Ukraine.
Russian Drone Debris Hits Infrastructure in Odessa
While the port in the Black Sea was hit, debris launched by Russian drones damaged civilian and transport infrastructure in the Odessa region of Ukraine, according to local authorities. The damage interrupted the supply of electricity and water.
Firefighters worked at the site of a railway infrastructure facility hit during overnight Russian drone attacks in Odessa on February 15, 2026, as reported by Ukraine’s State Emergency Service in the region.
The attacks are part of a broader strategy. According to reports, Ukraine’s long-range attacks on Russian energy facilities aim to deprive Moscow of the export revenue needed to sustain its large-scale invasion.
Russia, in turn, seeks to paralyze the Ukrainian power grid, denying civilians access to heating, light, and running water. Kiev officials describe this strategy as an attempt to weaponize winter.
US-Mediated Negotiations Occur in Geneva Before February 22
The attacks occurred just days before yet another round of US-mediated negotiations between envoys from Russia and Ukraine, scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday in Geneva. There have already been two rounds in this trilateral format this year, held in Abu Dhabi.
This week’s session will be the first on European soil and comes just days before the fourth anniversary of the large-scale Russian invasion that began on February 22. Neither side has shown optimism regarding a comprehensive ceasefire agreement.
Still, there has been some progress on other issues discussed in previous rounds. US-led attempts in Abu Dhabi did not resolve difficult topics, such as the future of the industrial Donbas region.
Statements in Munich Highlight Divergences on Security Guarantees
During a speech at the Munich Security Conference in Germany on Saturday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that there are still doubts regarding future security guarantees for his country.
Zelenskyy questioned how the US-proposed free trade zone concept would work in the Donbas region, which Russia insists Kiev must abandon in exchange for peace. He stated that Americans want peace as soon as possible.
According to Zelenskyy, the US team wants to sign all agreements regarding Ukraine at the same time, while Ukraine wants future security guarantees to be signed first.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio met with Zelenskyy in Munich.
Rubio stated that they discussed the security of Ukraine and the deepening of defense and economic partnerships. He declared that President Trump wants a solution that ends the bloodshed once and for all.
Senator Jeanne Shaheen stated that without real security guarantees in any peace agreement, the situation could repeat itself, as Russia would have prepared not only for Ukraine but for beyond.
The head of the European Union’s diplomacy, Kaja Kallas, declared that Russia expects to diplomatically achieve what it could not on the battlefield and relies on concessions from the US at the negotiating table. She stated that the key Russian demands fall to Europe.
Kallas said that if the goal is lasting peace, concessions will also be necessary from Russia. Discussions are taking place amid an escalation of attacks, including the recent incident in the Black Sea, which reignites tension in the region.
