The front originates from a cyclone way down in the extreme south of the continent and advances over the ocean, bringing light rain to the coast. The stronger message, however, comes behind it: the cold air that pushes towards the continent will spread the cold from Rio Grande do Sul to Bahia throughout the week, without yet being an extreme event.
A cold front followed by a new mass of cold air will reinforce the low temperatures right in the first week of June. The system is expected to reach states in four regions of Brazil, South, Southeast, Midwest, and Northeast, with minimums below 10°C and frost in the southern mountains as early as Tuesday, the 2nd, according to the forecast released by Meteored.
The analysis is by meteorologist Matheus Manente, from the portal Tempo.com, in a forecast published on May 29, 2026. According to him, in the first days of June a cold front originating from a cyclone that formed far south of South America will advance northward over the Atlantic Ocean, paving the way for the entry of a mass of cold air that will drop temperatures in the central-south of the country and bring cold to more northern regions throughout the week.
The cold front that brings rain to the coast
The first element of this scenario is the cold front itself. Although it advances through a more oceanic region, it will still be capable of forming intense cloudiness and light rains in the extreme east and coastal areas of the South and Southeast of Brazil, without causing strong storms over the country.

Authorities in South Carolina have transformed an abandoned torpedo ship that was leaking oil into a protected area: after 4 years stuck in a swamp, the hull was cleaned, taken 32 miles from Charleston, and sunk to become an artificial reef in an operation that swaps an environmental threat for a permanent marine habitat.
According to the forecast, the system predominantly acts over the sea on Monday, the 1st, and throughout Tuesday, the 2nd, it manages to generate light rains especially over the coast of the Southeast region, with light showers also possible on the southern coast. The front transports moisture mainly to the Southeast, leaving the weather cloudy with intermittent drizzles in the coastal strip and in the east of São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, and Espírito Santo.
The new reinforcement of the cold
The main highlight, however, is not the rain, but what comes behind the front. The mass of cold air driven by the system will give the cold over the central-south of Brazil a new reinforcement, dropping temperatures sequentially throughout the first week of June. As early as Tuesday, the 2nd, this cold air will be acting over the entire east of the South and Southeast regions.
In the following days, the mass moves northward, ceasing to affect Rio Grande do Sul, but gaining coverage over Santa Catarina and Paraná. It is a classic pattern of cold air advancing through the country, gradually bringing low temperatures from state to state, slowly expanding the area affected by the typical chill of late autumn.
The cold reaches four regions
The reach of the system is what draws attention at the beginning of this month. By Wednesday, the 4th, the cold air mass will have gained coverage over all the states of the Southeast, São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Minas Gerais, and Espírito Santo, in addition to advancing over Mato Grosso do Sul, part of Goiás, and part of Bahia, making temperatures milder in these states.
With this, the cold will hit states in four regions of Brazil at once, South, Southeast, Midwest, and Northeast, still at the beginning of June. It is important to note, however, that the intensity of the mass will not be extreme, meaning it is a significant reinforcement of the cold, but not a historic or dangerous cold wave, rather an episode within what is expected for the season.
Where and when the cold will be strongest
For those who want to plan, it is worth following the peaks of cold in each region. In the South, the peak will be on Tuesday, the 2nd, when much of Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina should record temperatures below 10°C during the early morning and morning, with frost especially in the mountainous regions.
In the Southeast and in the affected states of the Midwest and Northeast, the cold air mass will act more intensely on Wednesday, the 4th. On that day, much of the Paraíba Valley, the Mantiqueira Mountains, and the extreme south of Rio de Janeiro may record temperatures below 10°C, with the possibility of occasional frosts in the higher and colder areas. These are the moments when a heavier coat will be welcome.
A chilly end of autumn and winter in sight
This episode fits into a broader pattern for the period. The autumn season officially ends on June 21, when the winter of 2026 begins, and forecasts have been indicating that the cold should remain significant throughout this end of autumn, with new incursions of cold air expected in the coming days.
It is worth remembering that, according to meteorologists, most of June’s cold fronts tend to pass more oceanically, which limits the advance of more intense polar air through the country’s interior. Still, at least two stronger incursions of cold are expected throughout the month, one around the turn from the first to the second half and another, more intense, in the last week of June, already in the first days of winter. The El Niño phenomenon, which is forming, is not expected to influence the climate significantly this month.
The combination of a cold front and a cold air mass promises to make the first week of June feel like winter in much of Brazil, bringing cold from Rio Grande do Sul to Bahia and causing frosts in the mountains of the South and Southeast. Without being an extreme event, the system confirms the trend of a chilly end of autumn, in a warming, or rather, a gradual cooling towards the winter that begins on June 21. For those who feel the cold, it’s time to keep your coat handy and closely follow the forecast.
