Royal Family Will Stop Using Exclusive Train by March 2027, Opting for Helicopters and Commercial Flights to Reduce Public Spending
The British royal family announced that the traditional royal train will be retired by March 2027. The decision was made by King Charles III and represents a significant change in how the monarchy conducts its travels. From now on, members of the royal family will begin using helicopters and commercial trains.
According to the financial report from the Royal Household, the main goal of the change is to ensure the efficient use of public resources.
The institution’s finance manager, James Chalmers, stated that this is “the most affectionate of farewells,” highlighting the royal family’s commitment to fiscal responsibility and modernizing its practices.

The royal train was already under consideration for cuts in 1997 but was kept in operation, being frequently used by Queen Elizabeth II.
She used the vehicle during the celebrations of her jubilees in 2002 and 2012, traveling across the country and meeting the public in various regions of the United Kingdom.
In 2020, the train was revitalized for a special trip conducted by Prince William and Kate Middleton, the current Prince and Princess of Wales.
The journey covered 2,000 kilometers across the country and was carried out as a way to thank essential workers during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Before being permanently decommissioned, the train will make one last trip throughout the British territory.
The expectation is that this farewell will allow royal admirers to see the vehicle in operation one last time.
There is still no official confirmation regarding the train’s fate after 2027, but there are speculations about a possible exhibition at the National Railway Museum of Great Britain in York.
Among the reasons for deactivation is the high cost of operating and maintaining the vehicle. According to information from radio Itatiaia, a potential modernization of the train could require investments of tens of millions of dollars.
The purchase of new custom vehicles to maintain tradition would also be financially unfeasible.
In 2024 and 2025, the train was used on only two occasions, totaling expenses of over US$ 105,000. During the same period, 55 charter flights cost nearly US$ 819,000.
The helicopters, with 141 recorded trips, generated an average of US$ 4,600 per trip. Meanwhile, commercial flights totaled US$ 172,000.
In total, the royal family’s travels in the past year represented an expense of US$ 6.4 million — an increase of US$ 682,000 compared to the previous year.
