Central piece of the cutting head of the tunneling machine Monica weighs more than 137 tons, is seven meters wide, 73 meters long, and was transported through Cooma in an operation with 152 wheels
A piece weighing more than 137 tons from the tunneling machine Monica crossed Cooma on a Wednesday night at the end of last year, in a complex transport operation with 152 wheels heading to the Marica site, an important stage for Snowy 2.0.
Giant piece drew attention in Cooma
The transported structure is the central part of the cutting head of the tunneling machine Monica, equipment linked to the Snowy 2.0 project.
The load passed through Sharp Street and continued towards the final stretch of the journey on the Snowy Mountains Highway.

A 21-year-old woman was carried in the arms to the platform and launched from about 40 meters in a bungee jump in Limeira while a rope appeared coiled on the ground behind the group; witnesses were shouting something that no one around managed to stop in time.
With seven meters in width and 73 meters in length, the assembly drew attention for its size as it moved through the city. The piece was heading to the Marica site, north of Kiandra.
Transport required months of planning
Dave Evans, Operations Director of Snowy Hydro for Snowy 2.0, stated that the smooth passage was the result of months of hard work and planning. The movement showcased the preparation done before the journey.
Evans said it was an impressive sight to watch the enormous parts of the tunneling machine crossing Cooma to Marica. He also highlighted the merit of the traffic and transport team.
Cutting head was divided
The cutting head is the main excavation tool of a tunneling machine. Due to its size, it could not be moved whole and needed to be separated into five parts to allow transport to the destination.
The centerpiece is part of this set that would be reassembled on the site. The operation, considered complex, was safely completed by the team responsible for the route, as highlighted by Snowy Hydro through its director.
More than 140 loads arrived in Marica
In recent weeks, more than 140 heavy loads were delivered to the Marica terminal, coming from Port Kembla.
The movement was part of the preparation to put the tunnel boring machine Monica into operation in the Snowy 2.0 project.
When assembled and put into operation in the coming months, the tunnel boring machine Monica became the fourth mega tunnel boring machine active in the project.
Before that, its parts still needed to go through the final stage of transport, assembly, and organization at the remote site.
