With 170 hp, 4×4 traction and fuel consumption of 12.5 km/l, this Jeep SUV is a robust option in the used market, but it requires attention to critical points.

Finding a Jeep SUV with a diesel engine, 4×4 traction, and automatic transmission for less than R$ 95 thousand puts the 2017 Jeep Renegade Longitude on the radar of many buyers. The model stands out for the brute force of its 2.0 Multijet engine with 170 hp and a torque of 35.7 kgfm, figures that promise robust performance and fuel economy, with averages that can exceed 12.5 km/l on the highway.

However, the purchase decision for this sports utility vehicle goes beyond the technical sheet. Although appealing due to its price (with FIPE around R$ 85 thousand) and off-road capability, the 2017 model carries a history of reported chronic problems, especially with the 9-speed transmission. This analysis goes in-depth to detail what buyers need to inspect before closing the deal, weighing the vehicle’s real cost-benefit.

The Heart of the Jeep: Powertrain Analysis

YouTube Video

The epicenter of this Jeep SUV’s proposal is its 2.0 Multijet turbo diesel engine. With 170 hp of power and a robust torque of 35.7 kgfm at low 1,750 rpm, the engine defines the driving experience. According to data from automotive portals like Webmotors and Carros na Web, this power translates to acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 9.9 seconds and a top speed of 190 km/h, remarkable figures for a vehicle weighing 1,636 kg.

Coupled with the engine is the ZF 9-speed automatic transmission. Its technical advantage lies in the short gears for power and the long ones (eighth and ninth) for highway fuel savings. However, real-world experience reveals a paradox. Reports compiled in a Mobiauto article about chronic problems point to a hesitant behavior, with jerks or bumps during low gear shifts in urban traffic, creating an experience that can be frustrating daily.

The “Jeep Active Drive” all-wheel drive system lends it off-road legitimacy, with the ability to disconnect the rear axle to save fuel and automatically engage it upon detecting a loss of traction. The Selec-Terrain drive selector and good ground clearance (200 mm) reinforce its position as the most capable compact SUV of its time.

The Consumption Question: Between Promise and Reality

Efficiency is a pillar of the diesel version. Official consumption data, gathered by portals like Carros na Web, present variations: some indicate 12.3 km/l (city) and 15.9 km/l (highway), while others, more conservative, suggest 9.4 km/l and 11.5 km/l, respectively. The target of 12.5 km/l in mixed use seems, therefore, perfectly plausible.

The voice of experience, recorded in the “Owner’s Opinion” section of the Carros na Web portal, helps build a more realistic and positive scenario. Some owners report exceptional averages of 18 km/l and even 20.2 km/l on specific highway stretches under ideal conditions. It is concluded that the goal of 12.5 km/l is conservative for mixed use; on trips, it is expected that the vehicle will easily exceed this mark.

Life Onboard and the Critical Luggage Dilemma

The Longitude 2017 version was well-equipped for its time. The list of standard features includes important items like traction and stability controls, dual-zone automatic digital air conditioning, Uconnect multimedia center with GPS and rearview camera, and leather-trimmed seats, which became standard in that lineup.

The interior is a strong point, with an elevated driving position and a finish considered superior to the segment average, such as the soft-touch dashboard. The “Jeep feeling,” with robust design details, creates a unique atmosphere that distinguishes it from its more sober competitors.

Despite its qualities, the Renegade suffers from a fundamental practical flaw: its trunk. With a declared capacity of only 260 liters (according to technical sheets from portals like Carros na Web), the compartment is extremely limited, smaller than many compact hatches. This is one of the biggest points of dissatisfaction, as confirmed by testimonials in the “Owner’s Opinion” section of Carros na Web, creating a contradiction for a car focused on adventure and travel.

Reliability: The Chronic Problems That Require Attention

Acquiring a 2017 Renegade Diesel requires a careful assessment of its history. An article from Mobiauto, focused on chronic problems with the model, details a pattern of failures that buyers should be aware of. The 2.0 Diesel engine, for instance, has multiple reports of sudden power loss during driving, where the injection light comes on and the vehicle enters safety mode.

The 9-speed automatic transmission, as mentioned earlier, is another common source of complaints. Jerks, hesitations, and difficulties in engagement are reported issues, with some cases occurring at relatively low mileage, around 40,000 km, according to Mobiauto. Electrical failures and noises in the suspension (especially sway bars) are also frequently mentioned by owners.

It is crucial to require the complete maintenance history, checking if the 20,000 km intervals (specific to the diesel version) have been rigorously followed. A pre-purchase inspection conducted by a technician with proven experience in the Fiat/Jeep line is essential, focusing on scanner diagnostics of the engine and transmission and searching for leaks.

The Jeep SUV for the Right Owner

The 2017 Jeep Renegade Longitude 2.0 Diesel 4×4 is a niche vehicle, with exceptional qualities and equally significant flaws. Its strong points are the superior engine performance, excellent highway fuel economy, and genuine off-road capability, offering a package that no direct competitor delivered at the time.

However, the weaknesses are critical. The 260-liter trunk is the main limiting factor, making it unsuitable as a primary family vehicle. Additionally, the history of chronic problems with the engine and, mainly, the transmission represents a real financial risk that cannot be ignored. This Jeep SUV is, therefore, the right choice for a very specific buyer profile: someone who doesn’t need space, values diesel performance, and truly utilizes the 4×4 traction, being aware of maintenance costs that may exceed the average.

Considering the diesel engine’s performance against the risk of chronic problems with the transmission, do you think this Jeep SUV is worth the investment in the used market? Would the small trunk be a deal-breaker for you? Share your experience or opinion in the comments!
