Modernization And Efficiency Gains Mark Acelen’s Investments In The Second Largest Refinery In Brazil
The Mataripe Refinery, located in Bahia, celebrates this Tuesday, 17, its 74 years of operation with an important milestone: over R$ 2 billion has been invested by Acelen, the energy company that manages the facility, since 2021. The aim of this amount was to modernize and recover refinery assets, boosting its production and sustainability through improvements in areas such as safety, automation, and digital transformation, according to Veja.
With these investments, the refinery – which is the second largest in the country – was able to significantly increase the production of some of its main products. Diesel production grew by 33%, aviation kerosene jumped by 181%, and paraffin production increased by an impressive 198%. These gains reflect Acelen’s efforts to optimize processes and adopt more efficient technologies.
Increase In Production And Energy Efficiency
Since Acelen took over the management of the Mataripe Refinery, a series of actions have been implemented to maximize operational efficiency and reduce the environmental impact of the plant. In about three years, the refinery achieved a 9% reduction in energy consumption. This annual reduction is equivalent to the residential electricity consumption of the entire state of Roraima, which demonstrates the importance of investments in energy efficiency for the industrial sector.

Additionally, there was a 46% reduction in pollutant gas emissions, reinforcing Acelen’s commitment to more sustainable and less impactful practices on the environment. This result is a direct outcome of the modernization of operational systems and the adoption of technologies that promote sustainability in the operations of the refinery.
The Importance Of The Mataripe Refinery
Inaugurated in 1950, the Mataripe Refinery plays a strategic role for the energy sector in Brazil. In addition to being the second largest refinery in operation in the country, it significantly contributes to the supply of fuels in various regions. Its location in the state of Bahia also puts the refinery in a privileged position to meet the demand of the Northeast and facilitate the export of products to the international market.
With Acelen’s management, which took over the refinery in 2021 after its privatization, the goal is to continue expanding production and seeking sustainable alternatives for operations. Recent investments are just the beginning of a long-term project aimed at transforming the Mataripe Refinery into a model of efficiency and innovation for the sector.
Focus On Safety And Digital Transformation
Part of the R$ 2 billion investment was allocated to improving the refinery’s safety systems, seeking to ensure that operations follow the highest industry standards. Industrial safety is a priority for Acelen, which has implemented cutting-edge technologies to monitor and prevent accidents, in addition to improving the work environment for its employees.
Automation and digital transformation have also been key areas of investment. The adoption of automated systems not only optimizes production but also reduces human errors and enables a quicker response to potential operational problems. As a result, the Mataripe Refinery positions itself as one of the most modern plants in the country, ready to face the challenges of Brazil’s energy future.
