Expansion of Nestlé’s Instant Coffee Factory in Araras Promises to Increase Production, Modernize Processes with AI, and Strengthen Brazil’s Position in Exports, in One of the Largest Industrial Investments in the Sector in Recent Decades.

Nestlé confirmed that the city of Araras (SP) will be the main focus of the new investment cycle in coffee in Brazil.

The company will invest around R$ 1 billion between 2025 and 2028 to modernize and expand its instant coffee factory, a century-old unit that exports Nescafé to 65 countries and will have its production capacity increased by 10%, with intensive use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Industry 4.0 technologies.

Billion-Dollar Investment and Nestlé’s Expansion in Brazil

The announcement is part of a package of R$ 7 billion in investments earmarked by Nestlé for Brazil until 2028, aimed at industrial modernization, innovation in strategic categories, and capacity expansion in different units across the country.

Within this amount, Araras stands out as the factory that will receive the most resources during the period from 2025 to 2028.

The unit is considered strategic for the multinational’s coffee business and has established itself as a global reference in Nescafé production, both for the domestic and international markets.

According to a statement released by the company in September, the billion-dollar investment will be applied to a package of construction and equipment updates, focusing on productive efficiency, automation, and process digitalization.

The capacity expansion aims to meet the growth in demand for instant coffee in Brazil and international markets, maintaining the country as one of the main global hubs for the product.

Technology, AI, and Industry 4.0 in Coffee Production

The modernization of the plant includes the installation of a new instant coffee extraction line equipped with advanced control systems, in which Artificial Intelligence applied to Advanced Process Control (APC) monitors, in real time, variables such as roasting, moisture, and coffee color.

The goal is to ensure quality standardization, reduce losses, and anticipate possible failures in operations.

This continuous monitoring model allows adjustments to be made automatically, without interrupting production, increasing the efficiency and stability of the lines.

In addition to the AI embedded in process systems, the company is incorporating generative AI for predictive analyses and the creation of customized trend reports, as part of a broader strategy of “connected factories.”

Since 2019, the adoption of these technologies in Nestlé’s industrial park in Brazil has resulted in a reduction of more than 30% in unplanned downtime, a 30% increase in line flexibility, and a 16% growth in productivity.

Nestlé is investing R$ 1 billion by 2028 to modernize its instant coffee factory in Araras with AI and expand global exports.

New Industrial Structure and Focus on Energy Efficiency

The project in Araras also envisions the construction of a seven-story industrial building, focused on the stages of extraction, roasting, and drying of instant coffee.

The new facilities are designed to optimize production flows, enhance automation, and incorporate energy recovery solutions.

One of the highlighted measures is the use of heat generated in the industrial process itself.

According to the factory director, Fábio Kuhn, the unit will start capturing steam released during coffee extraction to convert it into energy, reinforcing efficiency and sustainability practices.

He notes that, since the 1980s, the plant has been using coffee grounds as biomass in its thermal system, reducing dependence on fossil fuels.

The combination of more modern buildings, enhanced automation, and data-driven energy management is expected to contribute to reducing operational costs and emissions associated with production.

Direct Jobs and Regional Economic Impact

The Araras factory is one of Nestlé’s largest operations in the country and currently employs just over a thousand workers directly.

In addition to its own workforce, the instant coffee industrial activity mobilizes an extensive network of services, suppliers, and logistics partners.

Estimates released by specialized media indicate that the operation of the unit supports between 3,000 and 5,000 indirect jobs in the region, involving transportation, maintenance, outsourcing, inputs, and other activities related to the coffee chain.

In other words, the number of “up to 5,000 jobs” associated with the project does not refer to 5,000 new positions created exclusively by the investment, but to the total number of indirect jobs supported by the operation.

So far, the company has not detailed how many new positions will be opened specifically due to the expansion, but emphasizes that modernization strengthens the role of the unit as an employer and driver of local development.

Historic Factory and Export Platform

The choice of Araras to concentrate the billion-dollar investment is linked to Nestlé’s history in Brazil.

The unit was inaugurated in 1921, initially dedicated to the production of condensed milk, and is recognized as the first factory of the company in the country.

Over the decades, the manufacturing site has undergone different cycles of expansion and is now primarily focused on instant coffee, with a capacity of around 37,000 tons per year, a volume that will be increased by 10% with the new investment.

The plant acts as an export platform for more than 65 markets, with a significant presence in countries such as Chile, Canada, and African nations.

The boost in production capacity is expected to solidify the factory as one of the main global hubs for Nescafé while strengthening Brazilian coffee in higher value-added segments.

In Brazil, Nestlé operates 18 industrial units spread across several states and employs more than 30,000 people in total.

The investment of R$ 1 billion in Araras adds to another cycle of contributions announced for the coffee business, including R$ 500 million earmarked for the expansion of the capsule factory in Montes Claros (MG) and the expansion of the Nestlé Professional division.

With a century-old factory that combines tradition, AI technology, exports to dozens of countries, and thousands of direct and indirect jobs in the region, to what extent can Nestlé’s bet on Araras redefine the weight of Brazilian coffee in the global economy in the coming years?
