Amazon Expands Use of Dash Cart in Whole Foods Stores in the US, with Cart 25% Lighter, 40% More Capacity and Planned Expansion Until 2026
Amazon has begun expanding the Dash Cart in Whole Foods Market locations in the United States, modernizing checkout in physical supermarkets with a cart 25% lighter, 40% more capacity, and a planned expansion to dozens of stores by 2026.
Dash Cart Replaces Traditional Checkout Model in Supermarkets
Amazon has introduced a new version of the Dash Cart, a smart cart that allows customers to scan products while shopping and leave the store without going through traditional checkout counters.
The technology has already begun to be expanded in Whole Foods Market locations in the United States.

China surrounds the country’s largest desert with a gigantic green belt of 3,046 km, transforming the “sea of death” into an “ecological scarf” and uses vegetation, straw, and solar energy to hold back the sand, protect oases, save cities, and create billion-dollar income for families in the desert.

Initially developed in 2020, the system serves as an alternative to the conventional checkout format.
It also acts as a partial replacement for the Just Walk Out technology, which used ceiling-mounted cameras to identify items taken from the shelves.
Operation with Cameras, Sensors and Computer Vision
The Dash Cart operates using cameras, sensors, and computer vision software that identify products as they are placed in the cart.
A repositioned and more sensitive barcode scanner in the new version speeds up recognition.
The cart has an integrated screen that displays the price of each item and the total amount in real-time. If a customer removes a product, the system automatically updates the final purchase amount.
Integrated Scale Weighs Fruits and Vegetables
Among the new features of the Dash Cart is the scale attached to the equipment, allowing customers to weigh fruits and vegetables directly on the cart.
Sensors and artificial intelligence calculate the price accurately, eliminating the need for separate weighing in the supermarket.
Payment can be made via contactless credit card, digital services, or through the Amazon account linked to the cart.
At the end, customers go to an exclusive area and leave the store without going through a traditional checkout.
Expansion in Supermarkets in US Cities
The new version of the Dash Cart is being implemented in Whole Foods Market stores in McKinney, Texas, Reston, Virginia, and Westford, Massachusetts. The plan is to expand to dozens of units by the end of 2026.
According to the company, the model has been redesigned based on customer suggestions, focusing on time-saving and convenience.
The cart is about 25% lighter and has a 40% increased capacity, in addition to featuring an automatic recharging system when parked.
This technology is already being used in Amazon Fresh and Whole Foods locations in the United States to reduce lines and optimize flow in stores.
While there are no plans for a launch in Brazil, the initiative reinforces the digitalization of physical retail and brings the in-store experience closer to e-commerce.
