Demand for Iron Ore and Nickel and Anglo American Investments

According to the CEO of the Brazilian subsidiary of Anglo American, Wilfred Bruijn, even though there are still uncertainties regarding the global and national economic scenario due to the Covid-19 pandemic, it is expected that in 2021 demand will remain strong for both iron ore and nickel, with Goiás being the center of these operations.

“We have noticed, especially since the second half of last year, a global increase in commodities, not just those of Anglo American. In the specific case of iron ore, China remains the great engine, and our product has the appeal of high grade (67%) with low impurities. Therefore, we foresee at least a first semester with very high demand”, said Bruijn.

Anglo American’s Production Outlook

According to Bruijn, the expectation is that there will be a 5% increase compared to the previous year regarding iron ore and nickel production.

In 2020, Anglo American produced around 24 million tons of iron ore within the Minas-Rio system, which is a 4% increase compared to what was produced in 2019. Thus, in 2021, production is expected to be 25 million tons or more.

“The investments this year include increasing productivity and contribute to the expectation of adding volumes to production”, reported Bruijn.
