On October 1, 2018, Archer transitioned four new existing operations to the “Drilling Services Platforms” contract with Equinor, previously awarded on April 3, 2018
Archer now provides integrated drilling, engineering, rentals, and well services on 13 of Equinor’s 20 drilling platforms and production quarters (PDQ) on the Norwegian continental shelf, the company reported this Wednesday.
Joachim Bengtsson, Archer’s Operations Manager at Equinor, stated: “Following the contract award in April, our onshore and offshore teams have worked tirelessly to ensure a safe and effective start and transition across all platforms. We have Archer teams and service providers with cross-training, in addition to increasing our workforce by over 400 employees.”
According to the company, the new contract scope, along with the four additional platforms (Grane, Gullfaks A, B, C), has significantly boosted the Archer employee family by over 1,000 employees dedicated to providing operational excellence and ensuring maximum value through total well cost reduction for Equinor.

Archer noted that it will continue to grow its organization in the coming months as it integrates and provides additional services. The contract guarantees Archer’s continued operations for Equinor on the Norwegian continental shelf until at least October 1, 2022, with a value of over 6 billion Norwegian crowns based on the current drilling schedule. There are other contract options that could secure operations until 2028.
Bengtsson added: “This contract represents a new chapter in platform drilling service provision for Equinor, through which the drilling contractor, service providers, and Equinor will collaborate as a single team and implement resources and skills to optimize deliveries. Our primary goals are greater efficiency, reduction of POB and cost per well, reduction of carbon footprint, and reduced risk exposure for personnel with no harm to people as our first priority.
“We will achieve this through close collaboration, continuous improvement through effective documentation and sharing of lessons learned, and a win-win performance culture. We firmly believe that this is and will be the future operating model in Norway.”
Also on Wednesday, Archer secured a contract extension with a major operator for an additional two years.
