Smart litter box uses AI, cameras, and self-cleaning to recognize cats, control odor, and monitor habits via mobile phone.

The traditional litter box has started to enter the era of artificial intelligence. The American company Whisker introduced the Litter-Robot 5 Pro, an automatic cat toilet that combines self-cleaning, AI cameras, feline facial recognition, health monitoring, and remote control via an app.

The product aims to transform one of the most repetitive tasks in the routine of cat owners into an automated and connected system. Instead of manually collecting waste several times a day, the equipment identifies the animal, detects the type of waste, automatically separates clean litter, and sends information to the owner’s mobile phone.

Litter-Robot 5 Pro uses artificial intelligence to recognize cats individually

The most aggressive feature of the Litter-Robot 5 Pro is the feline recognition system by AI. The model has two integrated cameras, including a front camera that uses facial recognition to identify cats in multi-pet households.

According to Whisker, the system can differentiate up to 5 cats within the same household. The identification is combined with internal weight and usage sensors, allowing the creation of individual profiles for each animal in the brand’s app.

In practice, the toilet ceases to be just an automatic litter box and starts functioning as a behavioral monitoring platform for pets.

Automatic system separates waste from clean litter without manual intervention

The Litter-Robot 5 Pro maintains the basic operation of the Litter-Robot line: after the cat uses the box, the internal globe automatically rotates to separate solid waste from the still clean litter.

The waste falls into a closed compartment at the base of the equipment, while the reusable litter returns to the interior of the globe. This drastically reduces the need to manually collect feces throughout the day.

According to Whisker, the system was designed to virtually eliminate the traditional act of “scooping litter” daily, something that has made the Litter-Robot line popular among cat owners in recent years.

WasteID Technology differentiates urine and feces to improve odor control

Another important feature is the system called WasteID™. According to Whisker, the technology uses sensors and AI to distinguish between urine and feces, automatically adjusting the ideal cleaning time.

When the system detects urine, it waits longer before starting the cycle, allowing clumps to form correctly. In cases of feces, the equipment speeds up cleaning to reduce odor within the environment.

This transforms the bathroom into an automated waste management system, not just a simple self-cleaning box.

App monitors weight, usage frequency, and cat habits

The system also works integrated with the Whisker App, available for smartphones. The app shows data such as usage frequency, animal weight, waste compartment level, and behavior patterns.

According to analyses and materials released by the company, the system can help pet owners identify behavioral changes or early signs of health problems, such as changes in urinary or bowel frequency.

The app also sends alerts when the waste compartment is full and allows remote cleaning cycles to be initiated.

Internal cameras allow real-time monitoring of cat visits

In addition to the front camera, the Litter-Robot 5 Pro also has a camera facing the interior of the equipment. According to Whisker, it allows monitoring of the animal’s behavior during litter box use.

The system records visits, times, and duration inside the box. In some cases, this can help pet owners and veterinarians notice behavioral changes associated with stress, pain, or urinary problems.

Some of these advanced features depend on the optional Whisker+ service, a paid subscription that unlocks longer history, stored videos, and advanced analytics.

Larger compartment allows waste storage for several days

According to Forbes and WIRED, the Litter-Robot 5 Pro has a larger waste compartment than previous models. The company claims the system can store up to 10 days of waste from a single cat before needing to be emptied.

This further reduces daily maintenance, especially in busy households or those with multiple cats.

The model also uses an improved sealing and filtering system to try to control odors within the closed compartment.

System designed for cats up to 13.6 kg

According to specifications released by Whisker and PetSmart, the equipment supports cats between 2 and 30 pounds, approximately 0.9 kg to 13.6 kg.

The design also received a larger internal space compared to older versions, trying to accommodate large breeds and multiple animals.

This detail is important because many smaller automatic boxes have difficulty with large cats or heavier animals.

Smart litter box shows how even pet routines have entered the AI era

The advancement of home automation has already changed TVs, vacuums, locks, and kitchens. Now, even pet hygiene is starting to enter this transformation.

The Litter-Robot 5 Pro doesn’t just try to clean litter on its own. It tries to monitor behavior, identify animals, analyze waste, and transform cat habits into data accessible via mobile phone.

In the end, the central idea is simple and at the same time extremely futuristic: the litter box has ceased to be just a container for cats and has started to function as an intelligent animal monitoring system within the home.
