“I felt a slimy texture brushing against my face. At that moment, I thought it could be a predator, like an orca, but I realized I wasn’t being attacked”, revealed Adrián.

Adrián’s father, Dell, didn’t know what was happening until he saw his son coming out of the water. “When I turned around, I didn’t see Adrián. I was worried, but soon I saw him emerge from the sea. Then, I realized that a large body that seemed to be a whale was nearby”, Dell said.
The incident was recorded on video by Dell, who was filming the trip with a camera mounted on the kayak. This footage revealed the true magnitude of the situation.
Although the whale did not act aggressively, the experience was terrifying, and Adrián had a chance to reflect on his luck. “I felt like I had been given a second chance. In the moment, I thought I might die, but I realized I survived something that was quick but very intense”, he said.

The animal that surprised the Simancas was a humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae), one of the largest and most fascinating species of whales.

With an impressive size, reaching up to 16 meters in length and weighing about 40 tons, humpbacks are easily identified by their black coloring, white fins, and tails with unique patterns of white and black, which vary from one individual to another. These features allow each whale to be uniquely identified.
Humpback whales primarily feed on krill, a small crustacean found in colder waters, and use sophisticated techniques to capture large amounts of this food, such as the famous “bubble net”, where they create a curtain of underwater bubbles to encircle and capture their prey.

After the encounter with the whale, Adrián began to reflect on the incident and the importance of this unique experience. He expressed how the event was both terrifying and amazing.
“It was an encounter with wildlife in a remote part of the world”, he said. The Venezuelan also shared that the video recorded by his father helped him understand the magnitude of what happened, seeing for the first time the image of the enormous whale close to him.
