Report by El Cronista highlights that immigration authorities of the three countries maintain strict rules for travel documents and warn that an expired or irregular passport may prevent boarding and entry into foreign territory.

Those planning an international trip usually worry about tickets, accommodation, and itinerary, but one detail can compromise the entire schedule even before boarding: the status of documentation. As published by El Cronista, Brazil, Venezuela, and Paraguay continue to apply immigration controls that may prevent the entry or exit of travelers presenting an expired passport or documentation that does not meet legal requirements.

Although there are exceptions provided in regional agreements, especially among Mercosur countries, the general rule remains clear: for international travel, the document used must be valid and in compliance with the destination country’s regulations. Otherwise, passengers may face delays, boarding refusal, and even prevention from crossing the border.

Brazil requires valid document and maintains exception for travel within Mercosur

Brazil requires foreigners to present a valid passport or travel document to enter or leave the country, as determined by Brazilian immigration law.

However, citizens of member and associate countries of Mercosur have an important convenience. On tourist trips, they can usually enter Brazilian territory using only a valid national identity document, without the need to present a passport.

Still, this flexibility does not eliminate the need to keep documentation regular. If the document is expired, damaged, or does not meet the requirements demanded by immigration authorities or the airline, boarding may be denied, or entry into the country may be refused.

The recommendation also applies to Brazilians intending to travel abroad. Before the trip, it is essential to check if the passport remains valid and if the destination country requires any minimum validity period for the document.

Venezuela maintains requirement for valid passport for international travel

In Venezuela, the Administrative Service of Identification, Migration and Foreigners (SAIME) requires international travelers to present a valid and current passport or another document accepted by international agreements.

Additionally, Venezuelan citizens must identify themselves as nationals when entering or leaving the country.

Passengers presenting an expired passport may be prevented from boarding by airlines or stopped during immigration control until the documentation situation is regularized.

At certain times, Venezuelan authorities have granted extensions to passport validity. However, these special measures depend on the rules in force and may not be automatically accepted in all migration processes or by all airlines.

Paraguay also reinforces documentation checks

Paraguay adopts a similar procedure during migration controls.

Foreigners must present a valid passport or identity document to enter or leave Paraguayan territory.

As in Brazil, citizens of Mercosur and associated countries can travel to Paraguay using a valid national identity document for tourism purposes, dispensing with the passport in most situations provided for by regional agreements.

Even so, Paraguayan authorities recommend that all travelers confirm the validity of their documentation in advance before boarding, as airlines and migration agencies may prevent travel when documents do not meet the required standards.

Those residing in Paraguay and traveling internationally must also observe specific regulations related to their migration status.

Which documents are usually checked before international boarding?

Before authorization for boarding or entry into another country, airlines and migration agents usually check various mandatory documents.

Among the main ones are:

  • Valid passport in good condition;
  • Identity document accepted by the destination country when there are specific agreements;
  • Correspondence between the data on the airline ticket and the document presented;
  • Visas or migration authorizations, when required;
  • Health forms or certificates determined by the destination authorities.

Any irregularity found during this check may result in delays, denial of boarding, or prevention of entry into the country.

Therefore, experts recommend verifying all documentation in advance, especially for international travel. Although Brazil, Venezuela, and Paraguay have specific rules, keeping the passport and other documents valid remains the safest way to avoid inconveniences during the trip.
