Project by Beatriz Maria Ferreira dos Santos achieved up to 90% superior growth, reduced costs, generated up to 50 new plants, and secured third place in the Plant Sciences category at ISEF 2026, with a prize of US$ 1,200
A research on orchid cultivation developed by Beatriz Maria Ferreira dos Santos, a student from Toledo, Paraná, won 3rd place in Plant Sciences at ISEF 2026, an event held from May 9 to 15, in Phoenix, Arizona, United States. The project showed growth up to 90% superior to commercial methods and earned a prize of US$ 1,200.
Orchid cultivation with plant extracts
A student at Colégio Estadual Jardim Porto Alegre – Unidade II, Beatriz investigated the use of plant extracts as a more accessible alternative to accelerate the production of orchids cultivated in vitro.
The cultivation medium developed also reduced production time and costs, according to information released by Febrace.

Sprouts can generate up to 50 plants
The project also analyzed the formation of keikis, sprouts capable of originating new seedlings. In some structures observed during the research, production reached up to 50 new plants.
The technique expands the possibilities of large-scale reproduction, potentially contributing to the preservation of endangered species and their reintroduction into natural environments.
