Sustainable Transformation of Apparel into Useful Products

Bunker One, one of the leaders in the oil and gas sector, adopts an innovative approach to sustainability by transforming used uniforms from its subsidiary Nova Offshore into ecobags and cases. This pioneering initiative, carried out in partnership with the NGO Mulheres do Sul Global, not only promotes the recycling of materials but also generates income and supports the local community of Niterói, where Nova Offshore is based.

By adopting this upcycling practice, Bunker One not only avoids the unnecessary disposal of uniforms but also contributes to the economic empowerment of refugee women and those in vulnerable situations. The transformation of the uniforms is carried out by skilled seamstresses from the NGO, with the collaboration of Vanessa Fraga, a member of the Fashion Law Commission of OAB-Niterói and responsible for Charlotte Brechó.

Social Impact and Waste Reduction

The transformation process begins with the cleaning of the uniforms by a specialized company, ensuring they arrive clean and free of any chemical residues to the seamstresses. In addition to providing the material, Bunker One pays the NGO for each piece produced, ensuring a sustainable income source for the seamstresses. The first deliveries occurred in September, with expectations of maintaining a constant production flow aimed at zero waste.

“Bunker One Brazil is committed to sustainability in all areas of operation, seeking to reduce environmental impact and promote eco-friendly practices,” states Flavio Ribeiro, CEO of Bunker One Brazil. The company, which already offsets 100% of its carbon emissions in scopes 1 and 2, sees recycling uniforms as a natural step in its sustainability objectives.

Upcycling and Community Benefits

The lifespan of uniforms varies greatly, and Bunker One, through the voice of Glória Sousa, responsible for the ESG area, emphasizes the importance of avoiding premature disposal and encouraging upcycling. The company aims for maximum efficiency in every piece, transforming overalls into up to two bags, depending on the state of the uniform.

The project also includes transforming scraps into cases, maximizing the use of materials and contributing to less waste. The bags are intended for corporate purposes, while the cases, in a second phase of the project, will be distributed to the school community, expanding the social impact of the initiative.

The partnership between Bunker One and Mulheres do Sul Global is an example of how the industry can respond to environmental and social needs, providing a constant flow of orders that ensures the economic empowerment of the women involved.
