Chinese Brand Adds 5 Million Electrified Vehicles in 13 Months, Outperforms Historic Rivals, Expands International Presence and Consolidates Strategy Focused Exclusively on Electric and Plug-In Hybrid Models Since 2022, Changing the Balance of the Global Automotive Sector
The Chinese automaker BYD reached 15 million electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles produced in December 2025, just 66 days after adding another 1 million units, consolidating its global leadership in NEV, surpassing Tesla and reinforcing projections of industrial dominance.
The Shenzhen-based brand celebrated the new production milestone before the year’s end, confirming an accelerated manufacturing pace and a significant competitive advantage over direct rivals in the global electrified vehicle market.
With only two weeks left in the year, the market already considers it almost certain that BYD will be crowned the largest seller and manufacturer of electric cars on the planet, ending over a decade of Tesla’s leadership.

Production Accelerates and Reaches 15 Million in Record Time
BYD’s progress in new energy vehicles has been continuous and rapid, reaching 10 million units by the end of 2024, 13 million in mid-2025, and 15 million in December 2025.
In just 13 months, the company added 5 million electrified vehicles to its cumulative production, a pace that evidences intense industrial growth and the ability to scale operations across multiple markets.
On October 13, the manufacturer celebrated the production of its 14 millionth unit, reinforcing the steady production cadence maintained until the year-end.
Global Leadership and Comparison with Direct Competitors
The scale of BYD becomes even more evident when compared to the main competitors in the sector, revealing a significant difference in the accumulated volume of electrified vehicles produced.
Tesla, BYD’s main global rival, surpassed the mark of 8 million electric cars manufactured throughout its history, while the Volkswagen group has not exceeded 3 million electric or plug-in hybrid vehicles.
This contrast places BYD as a dominant reference in the NEV market, setting the pace for the automotive energy transition on a global scale, with no immediate signs of reversal in this position.
International Expansion and Portfolio Focused on NEV
BYD’s acceleration is also associated with entering new markets and launching products tailored to specific regions, increasing the brand’s competitiveness outside China.
Examples include the BYD Racco, developed for the Japanese market, and the BYD Atto 2 DM-i, expected to arrive in Europe at the beginning of the next commercial cycle.
All offerings from the manufacturer are exclusively based on NEV mechanics, combining battery electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids, a strategy that supports its international expansion.
Strategic Change in 2022 Consolidated Growth
The current performance of BYD is the result of a strategic decision made in 2022, when the company definitively ended the production of vehicles powered only by internal combustion engines.
Since then, all industrial capabilities have been directed towards electrified propulsion, consolidating the brand’s presence in the Chinese market, which is responsible for a large part of the global volume of NEV.
This focus has also boosted exports to other regions, strengthening the company’s position in a global market rapidly transitioning to electrified vehicles, even in the face of traditional competition.
If the current pace is maintained, and barring significant changes in the scenario, BYD may become the first manufacturer in history to exceed 20 million plug-in vehicles produced next year, further expanding its industrial leadership.
