Two F-16 Fighting Falcons from the Bolivarian Air Force intercepted and shot down two unidentified aircraft that violated Venezuelan airspace in the state of Apure, an action that is part of Venezuela’s ongoing efforts to combat illegal trafficking and protect its national sovereignty.
Two F-16 Fighting Falcons from the Bolivarian Air Force shot down hostile aircraft that illegally invaded Venezuelan airspace, confirmed the Strategic Operational Command of the Bolivarian National Armed Forces (FANB) on May first (05/01/2024).
The intercepted aircraft, which operated without identification codes and with transponders turned off, were detected by Venezuelan aerospace system radars in the state of Apure. The incident highlighted the ongoing effectiveness of the F-16s, even after decades of service, in protecting Venezuelan sovereignty against air violations.
F-16s, Key Components in Venezuela’s Air Defense, Were Immediately Deployed After Invasion Detection
The F-16s, key components in Venezuela’s air defense, were immediately mobilized after the detection of the invasions, which occurred at different routes and times — a tactic presumably used by the hostile aircraft to mask their intentions and movements. Both aircraft were engaged and neutralized under suspicion of involvement in illicit activities, including arms and drug trafficking by transnational organized crime groups.

This event is part of the operation “Bolivarian Shield 2024“, aligned with the Venezuelan government’s security and defense plans. Although specific details regarding the deactivation of the aircraft were not revealed, it is assumed that the shootdown was carried out using the M61 A1 20mm cannon, one of the standard weapons of the F-16s.
Operation Reaffirms Venezuela’s Ability to Maintain and Operate Military Equipment
The operation reaffirms Venezuela’s ability to maintain and operate military equipment, such as the F-16s, despite previously imposed restrictions by the United States. The Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela has managed to circumvent these limitations, maintaining in operation a significant number of the 24 F-16s originally delivered in 1983.
The effectiveness of the F-16s in protecting Venezuelan airspace and the FANB’s ongoing commitment to combating transnational threats were once again proven in this incident, reiterating their crucial role in national and regional defense.
