The PRF Has Adopted a New Technology That Promises to Revolutionize Highways in Brazil. High-Precision Cameras Identify Violations Such as Improper Use of the Shoulder, With Fines Reaching Up to R$ 1,500. Focused on Road Safety, This Measure Also Aims to Educate Drivers and Will Expand to Other Highways.
In an initiative that is already making headlines, Rio Grande do Sul has become the stage for innovative traffic enforcement.
Ultramodern cameras capable of identifying violations with surgical precision have been installed on the freeway, one of the region’s main highways.
If you are a driver, get ready: fines can reach impressive amounts, hitting up to R$ 1,500. But what is the secret of this technology and how does it promise to revolutionize road safety?

Last Thursday (26), the Federal Highway Police (PRF) recorded 16 violations in just three hours of operation of these cameras on the freeway.
The main focus? Drivers who insist on driving on the shoulder, a dangerous practice that puts lives at risk.
According to the PRF, the adoption of this technology has a clear goal: to increase safety, especially during the summer, a period marked by intense traffic on the roads.
How Do the Enforcement Cameras Work?
The new cameras allow agents to monitor vehicles remotely and in real-time.
Violations such as improper use of the shoulder and dangerous overtaking can be caught without the need for immediate approach.
According to the PRF, this technology is not only punitive: it also serves an educational role, guiding drivers to respect traffic rules.
Since December, federal highway police have been able to access images directly from their posts, optimizing enforcement.
This integration allows for a faster response to critical situations, such as instances of dangerous driving or suspected intoxication.
In addition, the cameras are equipped with high-resolution technology that allows for details such as license plates and driver behaviors to be identified.
This precision is essential to ensure that fines are applied only in properly substantiated cases, avoiding errors and increasing trust in the enforcement system.
Heavy Penalties for Violations
Those who improperly use the shoulder are subject to a fine of R$ 880.41. However, in cases of prohibited overtaking, this amount can reach R$ 1,500.00.
Additionally, offenders accumulate points on their driver’s license, which can result in other penalties.
The PRF reinforces that, in addition to issuing fines, agents are prepared to stop drivers in more serious situations, ensuring that the roads are a safer place for everyone.
The operations are supported by trained teams to identify other risky behaviors, such as speeding, using a cell phone while driving, and disrespecting signals.
Expansion of Technology
According to CCR ViaSul, the concessionaire responsible for managing the freeway, the plan is to expand the use of these cameras to other highways under its administration.
Among them are BR-101, BR-386, and the Parque Road. This measure aims to extend the coverage of enforcement and ensure greater safety on the roads.
The company has already invested millions in the acquisition and installation of these devices, which use artificial intelligence to automatically analyze images and identify possible violations. This advancement reduces the need for human intervention, making the process faster and more efficient.
Moreover, CCR ViaSul plans educational campaigns alongside the implementation of the cameras, aiming to inform drivers about traffic rules and the consequences of breaking them.
The company believes that the combination of technology and awareness is the key to reducing accidents and saving lives.
Impacts on Road Safety
With an increase in vehicle volume during the summer, the PRF emphasizes that respecting traffic rules is essential to avoid accidents.
“The goal is not only to fine but also to raise awareness,” the agents state. Studies show that the presence of technological enforcement significantly reduces the number of violations and, consequently, accidents.
This initiative has also received support from road safety experts. According to them, automated enforcement is a global trend that has shown positive results.
In countries like the United States and Japan, similar systems have already proven effective in reducing accidents and improving driver behavior.
However, critics point out that excessive reliance on technology can raise questions about privacy and possible errors in records.
To minimize these risks, the PRF assures that all collected data is treated rigorously and that there are review mechanisms for contesting fines, if necessary.
Emblematic Cases
Since the implementation of the cameras, several cases have caught attention.
In one of the first weeks of operation, a driver was caught dangerously driving on the shoulder and, when approached, revealed he was under the influence of alcohol.
Situations like this reinforce the importance of enforcement, which goes beyond just issuing fines, helping to identify and prevent serious risks.
Another incident involved a truck transporting hazardous cargo without the necessary precautions, putting other vehicles at risk. Quick detection allowed the PRF to intervene before something more serious happened.
And Now?
With technological enforcement gaining ground, what do you think about this measure? Will it truly help reduce accidents or merely penalize more drivers? Share your opinion in the comments.
