Coordinated by Professor Kamila Rios da Hora Rodrigues, the course will take place on July 30th in the afternoon and will last four hours.
The initiative is especially aimed at the elderly audience, seeking to empower them to recognize and avoid the spread of fake news, a problem that grows exponentially during election periods.
According to the organization, the main goal is to provide participants with the necessary tools to evaluate the veracity of the information they encounter, especially on social media.
In addition, the course will address how fake news can impact crucial areas such as public health, increasing risks to the safety and well-being of citizens.
How To Participate: Registrations And Limited Spots
Registrations for the course must be completed through the Apolo System by July 26th. To facilitate the process, a link for registration is available, and if someone encounters difficulties, they can contact the monitor Caroline Lira via email clira23@usp.br for assistance.
The course is free and offers 40 spots, with priority given to elderly residents of São Carlos and surrounding areas. Participants will be selected on a first-come, first-served basis, and a minimum of 10 registrations is required for the course to proceed.
For those who complete the course, a certificate of participation will be provided, as long as they fulfill the total hours required. This is an excellent opportunity for the elderly to acquire essential knowledge about the digital world, protecting themselves against the traps of fake news and contributing to a more informed and conscious society.
Impact Of Fake News: Why Is It Important To Be Informed?
With the advancement of technology and the popularity of social media, fake news has become a global concern.
They not only distort reality but also influence important decisions, from elections to public health issues.
According to studies, elderly people are especially vulnerable to this type of misinformation due to a lack of familiarity with new technologies and the digital universe.
“Knowledge is the best defense against misinformation,” says Professor Kamila Rios da Hora Rodrigues. According to the coordinator, understanding how fake news is created and spread is crucial for individuals to make informed and critical choices.
Perspective For The Future: Education And Digital Awareness
USP’s initiative is an important step in educating the elderly population about the dangers of fake news.
Activities like this not only help protect the elderly but also encourage a culture of verification and critical thinking. In times of crisis and uncertainty, being well-informed is essential for all segments of society.
Moreover, this type of course is an incentive for other educational institutions and organizations to promote similar activities, expanding the reach of digital awareness.
The expectation is that, with more people educated on the subject, the negative impact of fake news will be significantly reduced. Click Here To Register!
