Unusual Situation Drew Attention at Airport and Did Not Injure Anyone, but Generated Concern About Operational Safety
An unusual accident occurred at the airport in the Spanish city of Alicante in 2022. A Ryanair Boeing 737-800 was hit by a Renault Clio belonging to Groundforce. The aircraft, capable of carrying up to 189 passengers, was ready for takeoff to Manchester, United Kingdom, when the collision occurred.
Human Error and Security Failure
According to reports shared on social media by Iván Palacios, the driver of the Clio allegedly forgot to engage the handbrake after parking the car in the airport service area. Out of control, the vehicle ended up sliding and colliding with the underside of the aircraft.
Despite the size of the Boeing — which weighs up to 79 tons when loaded for takeoff — the impact caused only minor damage. The Clio was left with a dented roof and the plane suffered scratches in the paint.

Delayed Flight and Mandatory Inspection
According to safety protocols, any collision with an aircraft requires a detailed inspection by the maintenance team.
Even with visibly minor damage, the aircraft needed to be checked before continuing its journey. This caused a 90-minute delay for the flight to England.
The incident, rare in aviation, drew attention on social media due to the size difference between the two vehicles. The responsibility for the accident should fall on the operational failure of the ground crew. The Clio became wedged under the aircraft, but no one was injured.
