A car was seized in the eastern zone of São Paulo after accumulating R$ 303 thousand in accumulated fines; the action is part of a program by Detran that uses artificial intelligence to identify recidivist offenders in the capital.
On Tuesday, October 21, 2025, in the eastern zone of the city of São Paulo, the Detran-SP team seized a vehicle that drew attention — a JAC J3 with impressive accumulated fines totaling around R$ 303.2 thousand.
The total of the infractions exceeded more than ten times the market price of the vehicle. The driver had a driver’s license expired since 2022, was not the owner, and was still driving without the mandatory licensing.
The seizure is part of an active inspection program that utilizes data crossing, flags vehicles with accumulated fines, and aims to reinforce road safety.

Why Did the Car Have So Many Accumulated Fines?
Detran-SP identified that the vehicle had committed several infractions, the most frequent being speeding and the improper use of bus lanes.
The sum of these infractions resulted in accumulated fines that surpassed R$ 300 thousand.
Still, the amount of penalties was “more than 10 times” the estimated market price of the car, valued between R$ 23 thousand and R$ 28 thousand.
How the Operation Was Conducted
The action was made possible thanks to an inspection system supported by artificial intelligence technology.
Detran-SP crossed data on infractions, identified license plates with recidivism — that is, vehicles with many infractions — and alerted the Military Police of the State of São Paulo for intervention at the right moment.
The seized car had been included in this list of “recidivist offenders.”
According to Daiane Thomé Felício, the traffic inspection coordinator, “The action integrates technology, data analysis, and inspection to clear the streets of vehicles that repeatedly disrespect traffic legislation. Each operation represents preserved lives.”
Who Was the Driver and What Is the Legal Status of the Vehicle?
The driver approached on site was not the legal owner of the vehicle.
He was driving with a driver’s license expired since 2022 and the car was circulating without the mandatory licensing — which constitutes a serious infraction and immediate seizure under Brazilian Traffic Code (CTB).
Despite the significant accumulated fines, there was no arrest or transport of the driver to the police station, as the infractions constitute a crime only in specific situations, and most qualify as administrative infractions.
Since the beginning of this inspection project, Detran-SP reports that seven vehicles with a similar profile — that is, with many infractions and accumulated fines — have been removed from circulation, totaling more than R$ 2.25 million in debts.
This initiative reinforces the idea that the combination of technology, monitoring, and police action can be effective in curbing behaviors that jeopardize safety on the road.
By focusing on vehicles with accumulated fines, the agency hopes to deter recidivism and reduce the number of serious incidents.
What Does This Mean for Other Drivers and Vehicle Owners?
For the average citizen, this case serves as a warning: having a vehicle with many infractions can lead to seizure, especially when combined with conditions such as expired licensing or driving with an expired driver’s license.
The accumulated fines are not just numbers — they represent the risk of vehicle removal and costs that exceed the value of the asset.
Moreover, when checking the status of a used vehicle or transferring ownership, it is essential to review debts and the history of infractions to avoid unpleasant surprises. After all, as this example demonstrates, accumulated fines can reach very high amounts.
