Cazoolo Celebrates Two Years as Braskem Packaging Development Center, Receiving More Than 400 Companies and Winning Awards for Sustainable Solutions.

Cazoolo is celebrating two years of achievements as an important player in the packaging industry. During this period, Cazoolo has stood out by receiving over 400 companies and gaining recognition for its innovative and sustainable solutions.

Located in the heart of São Paulo, Braskem’s Packaging Development Center has been a reference when it comes to innovation in plastic packaging. The packaging design laboratory has won multiple awards, consolidating itself as a true hub of creativity and effectiveness. The success reflects a constant commitment to seeking alternatives that contribute to a more sustainable future.

Packaging Development Center for Circular Economy

Responsible for creating projects focused on sustainability and circular solutions in plastic packaging, Cazoolo uses Design for Environment (DfE) methodology in all developed programs. By May of this year, Cazoolo had already received more than 400 companies, with an average of 75 visitors per month.

The methodologies combined between clients and professionals from the circular packaging design lab measure, enhance, and ensure the real sustainability of the packaging, offering brand owners proposals that present sustainable solutions. ‘We structure projects based on the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), combining measures that establish the circularity of materials’, explains Yuri Tomina, leader of Cazoolo.

Packaging Design Laboratory

Cazoolo provides a robust infrastructure for the production chain with a prototyping workshop, facilitating the co-creation of new solutions and businesses. ‘Our focus is to develop packaging that reduces environmental impact and is aligned with design for recyclability, optimizing the use of reusable materials, refill systems, and redesigning packaging through circular journeys’, comments Tomina. This commitment to sustainability has attracted numerous companies over the years.

Cazoolo has developed important projects for brands such as Vigor, Danone, Mars, Grendene, iFood, and L’Oréal. Additionally, it has also established partnerships with startups such as NutriGarden, Crilancha, Sallve, and Niul. For converters, the lab created materials in partnership with companies like Extrusa, Aptar, Vellaplast, and Diadema. The search for circular packaging shapes the programs developed alongside clients.

Circular Design Sprint and Other Initiatives

The Circular Design Sprint is an initiative by Cazoolo that brings together a multidisciplinary team to develop sustainable alternatives. Using methodologies such as Design for Environment (DfE) and life cycle analysis (LCA), it is possible to create prototypes that are tested and approved by companies for later market launch. Another significant program is the Design Challenge, which existed at Braskem and had nine editions until 2021.

‘The project started with the aim of enabling young designers to work with plastics. Since 2019, we have incorporated the concept of Circular Design focused on the development of plastic packaging’, explains Tomina. The program aims to empower design students to think creatively and sustainably, boosting their careers.

Recognition and Awards

The Design Challenge program welcomed students from institutions like IED (Istituto Europeo di Design), FGV (Fundação Getúlio Vargas), and ESPM (Escola Superior de Propaganda e Marketing) for projects with companies such as Raia Drogasil and Harald, and to develop solutions focused on Braskem. Since its inception, Cazoolo has accumulated numerous awards and highlights.

In 2022, it won the Embanews 2022/2023 for the monomaterial PE packaging of the Mãe Terra brand, in the Sustainability category. In the same year, it received the Brazil Design Award in the ESG/Circular Economy Design category, an award granted by ABDESIGN (Associação Brasileira de Empresas de Design). Another significant recognition in 2022 was the Great Packaging Cases award for the work with Ritto rice, from the Mãe Terra brand.

Cazoolo Awards and Achievements

In addition to these, Cazoolo was awarded in Design for a Better World in the Design and Branding categories, an initiative from Centro Brasil Design. In 2023, it gained recognition in the MIT Technology Review 2023 for Innovation, featuring in the Top 20 ranking. It was also honored by the Innovation by Design Awards 2023, hosted by Fast Company, which recognized Cazoolo as one of the best design initiatives in Latin America.

Other awards include the Great Packaging Cases 2023 for the organic compound Organosolví and recognition for the refill roll-on deodorant in the Design for a Better World 2023 and the Brazilian Design Award 2023. The 100% PE stand-up pouch made for Ritto rice was a leader in the WPA in the food category.

Continuous Recognition and Promising Future

In 2024, Cazoolo won the Embanews award for the stand-up pouch monomaterial with PCR Wenew, used for the organic compound Organosolví. The laboratory was awarded in two categories: application of recycled raw material and sustainable process for the recyclability of materials.

With so many achievements, Cazoolo now aims to serve micro and small companies with circular packaging solutions ready to be applied. And all of this is expected to happen soon, with anticipation for a future filled with positive news.

Cazoolo: Circular Packaging Design Lab

Created by Braskem, Cazoolo is a laboratory dedicated to the sustainable development of packaging, with a prototyping workshop available for the production chain. Its main goal is to create packaging that reduces environmental impact, is aligned with design for recyclability, optimizes refill systems and reusable materials, following a circular consumer journey.
