Implementation of an Advanced Distribution Management System to Optimize Energy Supply
São Paulo, June 2023 – In order to enhance the quality of energy supply for its consumers, Cemig is leading a digitalization project. The big highlight of this initiative is the implementation of the Advanced Distribution Management System (ADMS) provided by Schneider Electric, a leader in digital transformation in energy management and sustainability.
This acquisition, achieved through bidding, focuses on updating the management of the electrical grid, the largest in Brazil, which today is still dependent on internal legacy systems. Cemig, being the company most impacted by the integration of distributed energy resources (DER) in the country, also invested in the DERMS module. This module allows for efficient management and planning of active electrical networks, which will expand the connection of renewable and electric sources.
Integrating Technology for the Benefit of Consumers
The company, now equipped with new technologies, will unify several resources that currently operate in isolation, to manage, in real time, the entire network supplying energy to about 18 million people (9.5 million customers), accounting for 96% of the state of Minas Gerais. This means greater reliability, safety, and quality of service for consumers in 774 municipalities in Minas Gerais, including better assistance during power outages.

“We are at the beginning of the implementation and we are confident that all our modernization and energy efficiency goals will be achieved with the support of Schneider Electric Brazil”, says Djim de Andrade Martins, Systems Architecture Manager and Software Engineering at Cemig.
Cemig expects significant improvements in productivity and operational optimization, as the new technologies incorporate artificial intelligence (AI) and native connectivity, linking to the field resources of the distributor. This enables both real-time monitoring and continuous improvement of asset management.
The Vital Role of Schneider Electric
“The solution will automate many procedures that are currently performed manually, allowing the operations team to focus on more analytical functions, providing greater safety and efficiency in supervising and controlling the electrical system”, explains Hortênsia Américo, technical leader of the project.
In March 2023, Schneider Electric was recognized as the leading provider of Advanced Distribution Management System (ADMS) in the Guidehouse Insights Leaderboard for ADMS Vendors report.
“As a multinational company, Schneider Electric is committed to understanding and meeting the needs of local markets, which is why we are very proud to assist Cemig in its digital transformation strategy in Brazil”, concludes Marcos Matias, President of Schneider Electric Brazil.
