The Idea of the Partnership Project Between Klabin and Heineken Is to Expand TC100 to Other Municipalities Beyond Paraná
The brewery Heineken and paper manufacturer Klabin have partnered to create a 100% circular territory for packaging in Paraná. They chose the municipality of Telêmaco Borba, in the Campos Gerais region. The intent is for the city to recycle, repurpose, and transform as much solid waste and packaging as possible to prevent it from reaching landfills. According to the project’s survey, currently, only 11.7% of packaging in this municipality in Paraná is recovered through selective collection annually.

The initiative, called 100% Circular Territory in Packaging (TC100), was created by Hub Incríveis, a network aimed at reformulating the use of packaging, and also receives support from the reverse logistics program ViraSer. The project between Klabin and Heineken began in 2021 when they conducted an assessment of solid waste disposal in Paraná.
With Klabin’s sponsorship, an analysis was first conducted on the volume of materials destined for the city’s landfill in Paraná, the volume of packaging that is recycled and marketed by the local cooperative, and the most significant challenges in waste management in the region, such as the need to improve the structure of cooperatives or enhance public policies.

Development of Actions
This year, with Heineken’s involvement and its experience in glass waste control, the project’s goal is to develop actions to overcome the challenges faced, implement environmental education initiatives, and strengthen the practice of selective collection, thereby increasing the potential for circularity in this municipality of Paraná.
Through the partnership, Heineken and Klabin will create models for the proposed solutions to test them. The expectation is that other companies with experience in managing any types of waste, as well as NGOs and startups interested in the topic, will actively participate in the co-creation of solutions for the project.
Based on the effects of the pilot project, the intention is for TC100 to be applied in several other Brazilian municipalities, not just in Paraná. In fact, the selection of Telêmaco Borba as a test location for the initiative was made with future expansion in mind.
According to HUB Incríveis, the city in question has particularities that make it represent the “average Brazilian city,” facilitating the replication of the project by Heineken and Klabin.
